The Next Stretch
Lisa is still on "night shift," which is her preferred timing anyway, and let me know that she wanted to go grocery shopping in the wee hours again if I was up to it. I was tired enough that after I got off work on Friday, I went to bed around 2 PM after having lunch, slept for around six hours, was up for a couple of hours, then went back to bed and got up at around 1:40 AM. I started my "day," made myself coffee and a cup of oatmeal, and Lisa and I headed to the 24 hour WinCo Foods in Reno around 3 AM.
Aside from nearly being blown off the road by a storm blowing west through the Truckee River canyon, this trip was a piece of cake. There was little traffic and we were nearly the only customers in the store. There were people stocking shelves, but Lisa said she only saw one or two other customers. We got a lot of groceries, as we continue our policy of keeping the larder sufficiently overstocked with non-perishable food that we could go longer without a grocery trip. I had to cut my speed both going to Reno and coming home due to the high winds, but we still were home about 5:15 AM. We unloaded the groceries, Lisa headed off to bed, and I got myself breakfast from the Wigwam restaurant when they opened at 6 AM.
After breakfast, as the sky lightened, I decided to go after more weeding in the East Lot. My plan is to clear a 10 m wide area from the fence at the right. About 5 m is cleared, so I started working on the next swathe of land, working from the north to the south end of the lot.
I worked a little less than an hour. It was nice and cool; unfortunately, that wind continued to blow, so that even wearing a mask, I got a lot of sand and debris in my face, and my eyes were burning from the grit. When it started to rain, I decided that it would be best to stop and put the tools away. But I did manage to clear about 50 m2, most of the debris from which is now added to the to-be-burned-someday pile. It's nice to do something where I can work on it when I have the energy and where I can see tangible evidence of making progress.
It turned out to be good for me that I got stuff put away when I did, because the storm did blow through and the trickle of showers turned into a strong rain for a while. I stayed inside for the rest of the day, dealing with a CanSMOF (parent non-profit of SMOFCon 38 and the 2023 NASFiC) board of directors meeting and then dealing with administrative work for SFSFC (parent non-profit of this year's CostumeCon in San Jose, Westercon 74, and three past Worldcons). The wind has continued to blow like mad today, so staying inside seems like it was the right thing to do. And probably going to bed early, thanks to the oddball hours from yesterday through this morning.
