Wonder Woman: The Steve Trevor Special

Jun 08, 2017 09:31

Yesterday a special one-Shot comic book came out that focused on Steve Trevor and was written by the Nightwing comics' writer, Tim Seeley. It was FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG, his characterization of Diana - as a modern woman who is flirty with Steve and has a great sense of humor about it - THIS is the modern Wonder Woman that we need! She's been in Man's World for over ten years, and it's nice to finally see her move beyond being cast as this "fish out of water" type character. This is a Wonder Woman I can easily see Gal Gadot playing, and it's a Wonder Woman that heavily reminds me of Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman in the CBS series. Modern. A little quippy-with the bad guys. MORE, PLEASE!

And Seeley's Steve Trevor characterization is fascinating and full of depth. He has a form of "survivor's guilt" where Diana is concerned, and this is something I definitely want to see explored more. Seeley also introduces some great new elements - Sameer, Charlie and Chief from the Wonder Woman movie are here as old allies of Steve's that he used to run missions for Argus with. I enjoyed these characters in the movie, and I think they translated well in this issue.

Seeley also does something that I think Rucka has done brilliantly in his Rebirth run - he introduces elements from the Golden Age Wonder Woman comic remixed for today. A whole society of children who never grow up? Directly from the Golden Age Wonder Woman comics! And even more exciting, the villainess, Saturna, seems to be a remix of Golden Age Wonder Woman villainess, Eviless, who was from Saturn and only made one appearance, but it was a doozy of an appearance! Eviless appeared in Marston's very last comic, where she formed Villainy Incorporated!

Please, Please, PLEASE tell me that this issue is a prelude to Tim Seeley starting a run on the Wonder Woman comic book after Shea Fontana's five issues are completed!!!!  Because I LOVE Seeley's characterizations here, his fascinating interplay between Diana and Steve, and possibly setting up a new Villainy Incorporated - thus beefing up Wonder Woman's modern day Rogues Gallery - beyond a constant boring barage of mythological enemies! BRING IT!!!
