Wonder Woman!!!

Gonna just say that I saw the Wonder Woman movie 3 times this past weekend - 3 days in a row. The third time was in 3D, which was worth seeing, because the added depth made some things more apparent than before.

I'm not going to get into too many spoilers - except for the following spoiler, so if you don't want to know anything at all, don't read any further....

I am SO glad that by the end of the movie, all of the Greek gods are dead!!!! Hallelu! I did NOT want to see one more movie of Wonder Woman battling Greek Gods, or being manipulated into acting on their behalf for an entire movie. I think Wonder Woman's comic has been way too bogged down by the Greek gods in the past 20 years. And movie goers do NOT care about beings from an old mythology. People are showing up to a superhero movie to take in a modern, living, and more relatable mythology. We don't need these gods that are practically not worshipped any more. Nobody is walking around wearing an Apollo t-shirt and carrying an Artemis lunchbox.

Constant Greek god involvement usually leads to Diana looking like a powerless pawn, devoid of agency. Not only that, but Diana's character has an extremely strong moral compass. For her to be constantly paying deference to these beings who continually have weak moral compasses (Zeus, the god of rape and authoritarianism) damages her character and makes her look weak and stupid with blind cult-like obedience. Leave them OUT! I think Rucka has handled the gods pretty well in Rebirth comic book - mostly having them present by animal representation. They're less invasive, and more supportive. I can handle that.

I think Wonder Woman is at her most interesting when she's facing down threats originating in our world - or acting in our world. Except for Circe, I don't want to see any mythological-based villains. You get one left-over connection to the past old world and that's it. I hate a Wonder Woman who is merely a mythological janitor trying to stop the bleeding od mythological monsters and capricious gods suddenly leaking into the world when they haven't been before, and haven't amassed a huge new amount of followers. Diana is best to me when she pointing out - in a clever and humorous way - the stupid things about our society and shows us that there is a better way.
