Having Frites

Frites is french for fries. I might be wrong here though, so don't quote me.

Anyway in HK, its a Belgian beer hall that I finally got to try last week with the housemate. I've heard good things about it and it was quite nice to see that it wasn't all hype!

We made a reservation for Friday night but it didn't seem to make much of a difference as we still had to wait for abit too long for a table. The place was completely packed, even the bar seats! But I'm glad we waited, the food was very good (best mussels I've had outside Belgium). The housemate enjoyed her fruit beer and I opted for the beer paddle, which consisted of sample glasses of all five of their beers on tap and a small snack (ham croquettes) - Stella, Hoegarden and three semi-dark to dark beers. Surprisingly, I really enjoyed the dark beers. Usually I'm not that big on them but these left a sweet aftertaste and were very fresh. In addition to two pots of mussels, we shared a lamb shank and rocket salad. Both weren't too bad.

The place isn't cheap and I didn't like having to wait when we had reservations but otherwise I liked the place. It has high soaring ceilings and the place just felt very jolly. Granted its Friday night and everybody was clearly enjoying their food and drink, so you can't go wrong but still it feels like a place that can really lift your spirits on a cold day.

I'd say this place is worth checking out if you want good food, beer and something different!
