i have NEVER had so many computer problems all at once EVER

I cannot even understand this.

can't get my 4gb OR my 500gb drives to show up in the finder window on EITHER the iBook (my old computer) or the powerbook (using the external monitor to SEE what's going on).

I was able to install software on the new computer (since we were planning to get the display fixed) and upload the 4Gb of photos and video on there. couldn't do it on the iBook since there is less than 4Gb of space left on the drive! trying to transfer it to the external and the drive won't show up. at all. using either USB port. so I switch it to my iBook and it STILL won't show up, despite it showing up JUST FINE last week before the display died on the powerbook. I was happily transferring info from the drive to the new computer and when the display died, everything else got shot to hell, it seems.

soooo many related, nitpicky other problems that have happened in the past week that I don't even have the time or energy to get into. I just don't fucking get it.

I'm currently using Disk Utility to see if I can mount the drive, but because it's such a large drive, it's taking forever to even show up. *** and now that it has shown up... ugh. finally! I can mount it. Ok, I'm going to try this on the powerbook so that I can get the info off there and on to my external.

wish me luck!

got it to work w/o needing to launch disk utility. everything showed up just fine and I was able to transfer the photos and video. I tried the 4Gb USB drive and it's completely hosed. Won't mount, won't verify through disk utility -- get an error message, etc., and I can't run first-aid on it because it won't mount. So that's why THAT one wasn't showing up. No clue why my external hard drive was being stupid.

But it's all better.

Likewise, with the CD drive. When we were installing the program earlier, we started with the wrong cd. But after putting it into the drive, it never showed up, so I couldn't eject it. Despite other cds working before on the powerbook. So N looked up the manual and we tried restarting the computer while holding down the trackpad button. Out popped the cd. Then we tried the correct cd and it worked just fine. And so has every other cd we've tried this evening, just to make sure it was, indeed, a fluke.

And it's taken well over an hour to get the Smallest to sleep. Monday night, he was in bed before 10, for the first time in months. Tuesday, before 10:30. Wednesday, before 11, and tonight? It's close to midnight and he's showing little sign of slowing down, despite me trying to get him to sleep for -- as I said -- over an *hour*.

Sometimes parenting blows. I miss having downtime so much!

Edit: 12:30 and he's FINALLY asleep!

fire child, computer issues, sleep, woe
