when indulgences go bad

Aug 05, 2005 15:21

i had ice cream twice yesterday and once today. I barely had enough protein to cover the ice cream indulgences of yesterday and experienced a bit of agitation as my blood sugar dropped (as opposed to plummetted). Today, I had extremely little protein to pad out the sugar, and as a result, I feel like utter horse shit. I am cranky, bitchy, neurotic ( Read more... )

Things that i find are useful in dealing with backlash hangover...

1) Drink water. Drink water until you think you'll float away, and then drink MORE water. The metabolic processes that result from cheating create toxins in the body, and it's the toxins that create the mood swings &c. They are only shunted out of the body by excretion...sweat, tears, urine, and feces, and time. I usually find that working out is about the LAST damn thing on my mind when i've got a backlash hangover, but drinking more water than i can possibly believe i need is one way to help flush out all the toxins just a little more quickly.

2) If you think that two eggs isn't enough, eat cheese, if you have any. I have found that cheese, usually colby or cheddar, is an effective way to not only get protein and calcium into the body (both of which help to counterbalance backlash hangover), but a kind of fat that is useful in bolstering up the digestive system a bit and in sheltering the body from some of the backlash effects. It won't be immediate; it takes about 24 hours. But if there are moments when you feel able to eat (for me that can mean moments when the migraines i get diminish enough for the nausea to be manageable; YMMV of course) throughout the day, just an ounce or two of cheese consumed every few hours for a day can seriously help. If you have no cheese, eggs will work, but they don't have the same combination of good stuff, so you might need to take a calcium supplement or something.

3) Vitamin C supplements can be useful in helping to stabilize metabolic craziness in a backlash hangover. AGain, it's a 24-hour MINIMUM process (for me it takes that little, but i've been managing my blood sugar reactions now for more than ten years), but it can help.

4) If you are feeling particularly stressed, headachy, achy in general, or just lacking coping skills, Sleepytime Tea may be useful. We have to make it very strong, because we're usually taking it for migraine and nausea in addition to everything else, but you can experiment to see what works for you. It will have some nice effects: a) it regulates blood pressure and heart rate because it contains hawthorne; b) it calms the stomach and intestinal lining because it contains mint, which can help you eat if nausea is a problem; c) it will calm nerves and help to diminish pain enough to sleep or at least relax, because it contains catnip and chamomile; and d) it CAN help one to sleep enough to ease pain &c (if that's an issue).

And of course...which you no doubt have already figured out...if you're going to cheat, you need to understand how your body reacts. In my case, i know that if i cheat with something totally wrong, like ice cream, then i have to give my body at least 8 days to recover. The metabolic processes literally take that long to even back into something resembling a normal, level flow. MOST people require a minimim of FIVE days to recover...which is why elimination diets only allow one new food every week to ten days.

Anyway, of course, YMMV....this is stuff that's been useful for us, so it might have benefits for you too. :)

thankfully I don't get nauseated (er, not yet, at least), and I don't get migraines from indulging in excess carbs -- just an annoying tightness.

the water is helping immensely, and I just took some Vit. C. we're out of cheese and cottage cheese and need to go get more. we also don't have calcium supplements, which I've been wanting (cal-mag, specifically, for the magnesium). and the lack of stuff I need has been adding to my neuroses and anxieties, so I'm going to go to the store now. I'm much better than I was, but I'm not all good yet. :)

thank you!
