"So what do you think of Japan?" Fuji asked, smile a lot broader than what Tezuka remembered it.
"It hasn't changed." Tezuka said honestly.
Fuji inched closer. "Not at all?"
"No." Tezuka wondered if Fuji was asking him something that he was just missing. "I've missed this."
Fuji chuckled. "Yeah. Me too." And by that time he was right next to Tezuka and close enough that their knuckles brushed as they walked. "Nothing's changed?"
"Not that... I know of." Tezuka said. Fuji wanted him to say something and he didn't know what it was. Tezuka felt very close to panicking and he wondered if this was what his friends in Germany mean when they said that girls expected you to read their minds. Of course, Fuji was no girl, but he had certainly picked up the worst of both gender stereotypes in typical Fuji fashion.
"So everything's exactly-" Fuji stopped to check the street number on the apartment, which was indeed the one they were looking for "-the way you left it?"
Tezuka stopped too and surveyed the apartment. It was nice. It looked clean. Fuji had said it had 'aesthetic appeal' which had worried him, but this was... livable. "For the most part."
"So something's changed, right?" Fuji pressed. "Do you have the keys?"
"Yes, I do." Tezuka stuck a hand in his pocket and handed the keys he pulled out to Fuji. "And yes, some things have changed. It's inevitable."
"So...?" Fuji glanced down the rows of apartments and let his eyes settle on one-number fifty-seven-before starting again towards the door.
Tezuka followed him. "There are..." He thought as fast as he could. "A few new stores."
"You've been here before?" Fuji asked. "That's good. You'll know which-"
"No, back home." Tezuka said. He'd never been in this area of Tokyo before.
"Oh." Fuji kept walking. "Is that all?"
"I..." Tezuka sighed. "I don't know."
"You don't know?" Fuji stopped and Tezuka had to walk back for him. "How can you not know?" Fuji asked curiously. "I mean, it's what you think, right? So what else do you think changed?"
"Everything is older." Tezuka grasped at whatever might maybe be right. Fuji was being strange (again) and Tezuka (still) hadn't found a good way to make him stop.
"Mm..." Fuji started walking again. "You're older too."
"You know that. You came to visit." Tezuka said. It seemed to be over...
"You never came to visit." Fuji accused. It was playful, Tezuka thought. Fuji wouldn't be open about anything he was serious about.
"I'll make it up to you." Tezuka promised.
"Oh?" There was a challenge in Fuji's eyes.
"Yes." Tezuka stopped and waited for Fuji to stop too.
"How?" Fuji wanted to know. He stuck the key into the keyhole and turned to Tezuka, who just shrugged. "Okay, then. So nothing else has changed?"
Tezuka gave an exasperated sigh. "You're taller, all right?"
Fuji beamed at him. "You noticed!"
Oh. So that was what he was looking for.
