Fuji's room hadn't changed since the last time Tezuka had been there, just as Fuji hadn't changed. He glanced up from where he sat on the floor when Tezuka walked in, decidedly more calm than when he had run out of Tezuka's house the year before, and smiled. "Back from Germany?"

"I've been here for three weeks." Tezuka replied. "What took you so long?"

Fuji laughed a little. "I've been here for two. Really, Tezuka, you should have known that."

"Did you kno-"

"Yup." Fuji nodded.

"You just decided not to visit?" That should have offended Tezuka, or at least upset him. For some reason, though, it just made him all the more eager to be with Fuji now.

"Well..." Fuji tilted his head. It sounded like he was going to say something else, but nothing else was forthcoming.

When Tezuka realized this, he walked calmly over to Fuji's bed and plunked himself down on it. "So how was America?"

"Boring. Germany?" Fuji said.

"The training menus there were impressive." Tezuka said. It was boring.

Fuji leaned against the wall and looked up at his ceiling. "I really missed this." He said.

"Me too." Tezuka said.

They didn't say anything for a full minute before Fuji began again. "It's weird." He said, "Everyone else is still in school, you know."

"I know." Not that Tezuka had tried to get into contact with them again; he hadn't. But for some reason, once he left, people whom he had not been particularly close to suddenly thought themselves close friends with him and had dropped by to visit. They had shared a few awkward pleasantries before the new 'friend' would say something about homework and leave.

"I really miss being together." Fuji said. "I mean, everyone... I really miss being on the team."

"You can join another team." Tezuka said.

Fuji looked at him. "It wouldn't be the same." You wouldn't be there.

Tezuka looked away and the silence came again. It was the same sort of comfortable silence that always came between them, perhaps a close relative of the one that had always been there before. It was still comfortable, but strange. Different. Fuji was acting strangely, holding back, nervous. Tezuka couldn't understand it and he wondered if he really wanted to. Understanding Fuji seemed like taking something away from him. Something important and distinctly Fuji.

Then he saw the sparrow that sat on Fuji's desk and, without another thought, he got up and walked to it. He picked it up and he could feel Fuji's eyes boring into him.

"Do you honestly believe," Tezuka asked, "That this is going to belong to the person you will love most?"

Fuji nodded, shocked silent for the first time since Tezuka had ever known him. His gaze was inscrutable and terrifying in how guarded it was against Tezuka.

Tezuka realized that Fuji was afraid.

He thought for a long moment before he said what he did, scared that he was the one who was doing this to Fuji and scared that he would do even more harm. "I'm going to take this." Tezuka said, motioning to the sparrow. "I don't know if you... I'll make you want to give me everything that comes with this. I swear."

And because it sounded so much less cool when he said it out loud than when he thought about it in his head, Tezuka wasn't looking at Fuji when what he said started to sink into Fuji's brain. He definitely wasn't prepared when he felt Fuji tackling him to the ground and when Fuji's lips were suddenly on his, the only thing that registered in his mind was that oh-my-god-Fuji-is-on-top-of-me.

Still, he got it eventually, and started kissing back. Only then did Fuji pull away.

"Idiot." He said. "I gave it to you forever ago."
