[fic] Askew

Dearest f-list. I really wasn't planning to post a fic today. Really I wasn't. But apparently Konomi likes birthdays around this time, so I have to post. Well, I needed to write more D1 anyways. I don't think the title has anything to do with the fic...

Title: Askew
Rating: PG
Pairing: Yagyuu/Niou
Summary: Fifteen drabbles for Yagyuu.

-x-

Niou carried himself with the same sort of youthful abandon that he had when they were in junior high, Yagyuu noticed. He smiled and laughed and Yagyuu was amazed when he still noticed at the exact moment that Niou tried to prank his friend. His glance must have been very heavy just then, because Niou looked over and Yagyuu looked away, acutely aware of how much he'd changed.

But Niou knew Yagyuu as well as Yagyuu did Niou and he walked over and looked Yagyuu up and down and finally said, "Not too bad, Yagyuu..."

Yagyuu smiled. "Same to you."

The first time Yagyuu saw Niou, he was being dragged through the hallway by an irate teacher. He was laughing, not at all abased by what should have been a humiliating punishment.

Yagyuu thought at first that he was annoyed that there were such troublemakers in Rikkai. Then, when he didn't feel the annoyance building up to a headache, he thought that he felt bad for the poor guy. And when he saw Niou again and didn't feel ashamed for him, he realized that wasn't it either.

It took him two whole years to realize that he had been jealous.

-x-

Doing anything with Niou required an abeyance of suspicion and a whole lot of guts, Yagyuu knew. Like doubles. Yagyuu had expected a perfectly normal doubles match at the Kantou finals until Niou came up to him three weeks before the event and told him that they were going to switch.

"Switch?"

Niou nodded.

"What the hell?"

"If that's what you're thinking..." Niou smirked. "Think how Seigaku's going to react."

And just like that, Yagyuu had given in, because it would be brilliant. He didn't know anyone in Seigaku's regulars, but the thought of how anyone would react was... exciting.

When Yagyuu parents found them together one day after school, Niou expected him to abjure the affections that he had been so ardently proclaiming moments ago. Hell, that was what Niou would have done in the same situation. Niou smiled wistfully and opened his mouth, about to spout something ridiculous about a dare, but Yagyuu beat him to it.

"We were kissing." He said, as if that much weren't obvious.

His parents stared at him.

"I like him." Yagyuu explained slowly, as though he thought his parents idiots for not getting it right away.

Niou had never wanted Yagyuu more.

During and leading up to finals week, Niou abnegated himself of Yagyuu and locked himself in his room. Yagyuu was understandably worried, but Niou was even more so, because of a certain bet with a certain classmate that might turn out badly if he didn't get a perfect score. It was dumb, he knew, and he should never have accepted any dare from Yukimura, but his damned ego got in the way just like it got in the way of everything, so here he was.

In his room.

Without Yagyuu.

With a gargantuan pile of study materials

Without Yagyuu.

Fuck.

-x-

"How the hell...?" Marui popped a bubble-gum bubble as he stared at the scores tacked up on the wall. Yagyuu was, for once, in complete agreement with that sentiment.

Of course, he'd always known that Niou was an abstruse person. He couldn't possibly have understood all the intricacies of his doubles partner, not yet anyways. Still, he thought that he should have at least known that Niou was a fucking genius. It was a comfort that Yanagi seemed just as shocked as he was, though not a very great comfort. Yanagi was smart, but Yagyuu should have known Niou better.

In sixth grade, their teacher gave candies for well done homework and Yagyuu had to admit that he was a bit of a teacher's pet, just for that. Still, his classmates were all jealous of the day by day accretion of candy and that was definitely more than worth smiling at annoying Nozomi-sensei. He was a perfect 'friend,' of course, and offered to share the candy whenever he saw someone looking, but deep down he knew that the candy was definitely his.

Until Niou asked. Yagyuu pushed the entire pile at him and told him to take whatever he wanted.

Niou watches silently when, in the acme of the match, Yukimura stumbles and falls over. It looks like defeat but Niou knows that that isn't it. The team, which had been watching silently as their great leader was slowly worn down by an upstart second year, surges forward as Sanada tries to keep them back. Niou doesn't move.

Yagyuu is running forward, opening his cell phone and calling speed-dial-four: his parents' hospital. Yanagi is already there and is trying to make sure that Yukimura breathes. Kirihara is pale and Marui calms him.

And there is nothing that Niou can do.

-x-

Yagyuu dreaded being in the same class as Niou because there was no doubt in his mind that someday, Niou would mess up and Yagyuu would have to clean it all up. Surprisingly, though, he actually enjoyed the experience.

Because Niou didn't mess up; his acumen led him to time each prank perfectly. Even more amazing, though, was that his victims were the ones who laughed with him and helped him plan the next prank. Yagyuu realized that Niou rarely picked on people who would prank him back.

And he never pranked anyone who was too weak to laugh along.

-x-

Niou was delighted to find that Yagyuu was not only a capable prankster but a fairly adroit one. The fact that this particular fact was more than likely due from Yagyuu's shame in what they were doing did stem his happiness a bit, but not overly much. Now that he had a partner who could do ridiculous things without anyone knowing...

Well, he got into more trouble than normal, because everyone assumed that as soon as anything went wrong, it was Niou's fault. Even if it wasn't.

But it was still the best thing that had ever happened to him.

-x-

Niou lives on the axiom that if he tried hard enough, anything would be possible. Only Yagyuu knows this.

For some reason, though, people think that Niou is a cynic. They think that he thinks that the world is out to get him and that he wouldn't trust anyone further than he could throw them. Actually, Niou trusts just about everyone that he meets. It's Yagyuu that won't allow them into his confidence.

Maybe it's just because Yagyuu knows how to act around people and Niou never grew up enough to learn that. When he realized this, Yagyuu felt jealous.

-x-

In all his silly endeavors, Niou was playful and mostly just wanted to do something to get his mind off the boredom that was school. Yagyuu, too, wanted to end his boredom but he was bellicose in doing so. He planned out every little stage in a way that even Niou was annoyed and everything had to be decided beforehand. Niou almost called off their first prank together, but later, when the teacher was covered in bright pink paint and golden glitter and no one was looking at them, he changed his mind. Yagyuu was anal, but also a genius.

-x-

Sometimes at night, Niou just liked curling up on a sofa and listening to the cadence of Yagyuu's voice, going up and down and wrapping around him. Yagyuu didn’t talk the same when they were home alone as he did when they were outside. Out there, he was cold and polite and unfailingly benevolent, so much so that Niou got jealous more often than not. At home, he was still kind but it wasn't the casual benevolence of the privileged but the sweet attention of a lover. At home, he wasn't cold and almost never polite. Niou loved this Yagyuu.

-x-

Yagyuu never complained. If he thought something was unfair, he might seethe about it inside for weeks on end, but he wouldn't complain. That would be rude. If he was nearly dying from Sanada's idiotic training plans (which no one would admit worked, though they did), he would just frown lightly and keep running. With three tons of weights on.

Unless he was with Niou. Then he carped away, tearing at his idiotic parents, incompetent teachers, and anything else that might come to mind. Niou would listen patiently and occasionally slip in a word of sympathy.

Everyone needed to vent.

-x-

Between Niou and Yagyuu, there was a special sort of causality. Yagyuu needed to let out everything he held in, so Niou played a prank. Niou got caught, so Yagyuu waited after school. Yagyuu didn't want to go home late, because his parents would nag and nag and nag, and they would nag just as much as if he didn't go home at all that day. So Niou snuck him in through the second story window. Niou caught a cold, so Yagyuu skipped school. Yagyuu skipped school, so Niou helped him catch up.

Niou loved Yagyuu, so Yagyuu loved Niou.

-x-

And apparently ketchupblood still loves this format the most of all. ♥
