Susan got back to the flat that evening, with the place all to herself. Ernie and Hannah were out having dinner somewhere, and Susan was glad to be alone after a long day--her friends fuss over her a lot, which wasn't such a bad thing, but sometimes it was rather annoying.
She changed into her nightclothes, ready for a good read and a nice snuggle with Sassy and Ichabod.
Susan went to pick up her pets from their basket, but only Ichabod was rolling around in it. Sassy was nowhere to be found.
Susan called out for her cat, but Sassy didn't show up. Then Ichabod rolled himself out of the basket and crawled over to the picture window, which was slightly ajar. Ichabod's chitter seemed to indicate that Sassy went outside. Susan opened the window wider to search for her cat.
"Sassy!" Susan called out. Ichabod chittered loudly.
Then Susan noticed that the planter box was dug into, and there were scratches on the wood. The scratchmarks were bigger than Sassy's claws, and there was a trail of dirt with two pairs of cat tracks, one larger than the other.
Susan gritted her teeth. "CROOKSHANKS!"
There will be no kittens in this house, she thought as she changed her clothes at the flick of her wand and she was off to see Hermione to claim her poor Sassy.
