Notes from Home

I've gone into work one day this week, thanks snowpocalypse! It's been frustrating as heck wondering what's going to be open and if the metro's running so I can actually get to work and if I should impose on a coworker who lives nearby to give me a ride, etc... I'm getting to work tomorrow because stentoriansista is dropping me off since the buses aren't running yet (they probably will be by the time I get home tomorrow, woo!).

And despite all of this time at home, I haven't gotten much done. I finished Dad's Christmas socks, cast on for S's baby blanket, made chili, baked some cookies, stentoriansista made bread and beef stew, we shoveled out her car (twice), attempted sledding, and did some cleaning. We did a mammoth clean of the top flour, which was badly needed and I did a bunch of laundry. I also got a lot of sleep and no exercise, which I'm not going to feel guilty about. I also read... um... 5 books? 6? We didn't have power for 12 hours on Saturday, so all we could do was curl up in bed (couldn't even bake because we have an electric stove) with a book, so I went through 3. One was Odd & the Frost Giants, but still. I'm so looking forward to going to work tomorrow, going to pilates and then possibly leaving the house and going to a movie and/or restaurant.

Alas, what I will not be doing this weekend is performing in the Vagina Monologues. Our venue's chosen to not open this weekend because of the snow, so now we have to reschedule, ay yay yay. I really like the ladies in my cast! Hoping we can keep some of 'em around.

Tigress' Can Jam canning week starts on Monday. The challenge? Carrots! I'm totally excited. I've been reading up on pickling recipes, googling carrot chutneys and deciding what I need to buy. And I better decide soon because I'm hoping to run to the farmer's market on Saturday, weather permitting. I can't decide what to do. I made pickled kohlrabi and carrots last summer and then used the brine for just carrots and both were utterly delicious (even if it was dangerous). I'm wondering if it'll work in water bath canning, but I think the pH should be high enough. Heck, maybe I'll do both.

House hunting continues. Slowly. DC getting 30" of snow has made it harder to get out and look at places.

Ugh, my head hurts. I think it's time for bed.
