Diet progress

My new diet is going well. I've been on it for about 3 weeks and can already tell that I've lost some weight. I'm not sure how much because I don't regularly weigh myself, nor do we own a scale. My goal is to get my old jeans back down from the attic and be able to wear them again. I'm also using this diet to overcome my sugar addiction. I haven't had any sugar in the last three weeks, and I'm feeling great. I've already given up caffeine, did that a few weeks before I started the diet. This is the only diet I've heard of that really makes sense, and that I believe the studies quoted in it. Atkins always seemed like a bad idea to me. Most fad diets these days just encourage people to eat nearly the same crap they've always eaten, and thus they gain the weight back when they stop the diet. So if I can lose weight on this diet, as well as protect myself from cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, insulin resistance, and diabetes, so much the better. But I don't intend to just go back to the way I was eating before, once I've lost the weight. I think that I might slowly add in some of the things I used to eat for dinner, but none of the processed stuff. So some pasta if it's whole wheat, and the stir fry that I make. I'd still like to keep the meat as a very small portion of my diet. And I'll stick with big salads for lunch.

So here's what I eat on a typical day:

Breakfast: Whole grain muesli (with dried fruit and nuts) I add fresh blueberries and soy milk.

10 o'clock break: Piece of fruit, eg. apple, banana, peach, orange, kiwi.

Lunch: Big old salad with beans or peas, tomatoes, home-grown alfalfa sprouts, cucumber, bell pepper, and salsa or hummus as dressing, on a bed of baby spinich and romaine.

4 o'clock break: Another piece of fruit, different from the morning break.

Dinner: Same as lunch, with some cooked veggies on the side if Andrew is cooking.

I still eat Sunday dinner at the in-laws, though I try to have just a small piece of meat and a small amount of gravy. I don't miss the meat much, but dairy was hard to give up, and is still tempting. But I'm strong and I will resist it, at least for the 6 weeks. We'll see after that. It is a lot of empty fatty calories, though it does taste yummy. Mmmmmmm cheese...
