Sitting in the limousine; at the end part of the automobile, he glanced around him. There were different glasses of wine, and even various kinds of liquor decorated the make-shift bar inside. He was really curious why the man had to pick him up with an escort and in a luxurious ride. Looking out the tinted windows, he saw that the car was cruising along the boulevard. The sun was slowly setting in the horizon, painting different hues of violets and reds.

He didn’t have any watch with him, so he just guessed [READ MORE >>]that it was almost mid-afternoon or maybe closer to seven. The drive was a little fast that when it reached a grand villa in the outskirts of Tokyo, the sky was still clear and the light wasn’t faded yet. His heart thumped fast as if he had just ran a marathon as he was directed to the patio and asked to sit on one of the lavish looking seats.

The patio was green and filled with wonderful flora. Apparently, the owner of the house had a great gardener. There were lattice in some parts of the garden that were habitats of different creeping vines. His eyes looked from left to right, scanning the area like a curious little kid. He was really amazed that there were places in Tokyo that had this plenty of greenery. His thoughts were broken when he heard soft footsteps approach.

The man that had supposedly saved him from his demise and the one who spent a lot of money for his hospitalization emerged from the villa. He wasn’t wearing a suit now; he was wearing what seems to be a Hawaiian shirt. Satoshi almost laughed at the change of clothes from the last time he had seen the man. His eyes connected with the other one and he immediately looked away. He felt himself blush from the contact.

He found him a little awkward in the change of his attire. Still, his face was pleasant behind the incredible scowl that he was showing. The man walked slowly, breaking the silence among the birds in the trees. As he came within reach, the first thing that caught Satoshi’s attention was the remarkable mole on his chin. It was like a beautiful feature in the scowl that was breaking the quality that the man had.

The man spoke:

“I only do what I want to.”

This didn’t make any sense to Satoshi. Still, the man spoke again; this time, he spoke clearer, “I do what I want to. I do it because I want things that I only want to have.”
Satoshi spoke for the first time since he got to the villa, “I don’t understand.” He was still sitting, unmoving from his place.

“I own this place and the place where you had your accident,” the man spoke once again.
Satoshi’s mind suddenly was occupied by the flashes of memories from then. It was almost like he was scanning a huge building as he tried to recall the reason for him to be in that certain place. He wanted to swear; there was that sudden pain in his temples as he forced himself to remember that past. He already let it go, thinking that it didn’t matter; but this man was forcing him to. There seemed to be voices inside his head as he closed his eyes in frustration, still he couldn’t - for the love of the gods - remember anything significant at all.

The man spoke, breaking him from his reverie, “I’m Kazunari Ninomiya; owner and CEO of Ninomiya Industries.”

What the man said should make sense to him, but he was lost inside his fantasies as he now knew the name of his savior. He opened his eyes slowly, and he stared at the man in front of him. He tried to recollect where he had seen him and it suddenly clicked the switch of the lights in his mind. I have seen him on the TV and newspapers. Now, I remember. The reason that I was there was… Then his train of thought stopped right there. He still couldn’t make the connection. No matter. I’ll remember it eventually.

A phone rang in the distance. Then there was silence. Even the trees stopped moving. There was no breeze and the air became a little muggy. After what seemed like eternity - though it was only for a couple of seconds - Kazunari Ninomiya continued his self introduction, but he seemed to talk more to himself than to Satoshi. “I was in my workplace and I was making some experiments regarding the new game that I was thinking to release in the next two months. I took a break and went to the fire escape that was on the same floor. I took a pack of cigarettes and a lighter from my pocket. That’s when it happened.”

He paused and averted his gaze to look at the horizon from afar. Satoshi observed that the other seemed to be in a deep thought. After a few moments, Kazunari continued his litany, “I lit one of the cigarettes and puffed. And as I looked at the scenery, my hands just happened to itch and lit the box of cigarettes. As they burned, I realized what I had done and threw it in the nearest trash bin that I found, and I left and went back to my workroom. However, it wasn’t a trash bin; it had kerosene in it. You know what happened next.

“When the fire alarm went off, I wasn’t in my workroom anymore. I was in the control room, checking the customers from the monitors. And then I saw what was happening. There was chaos all around and I saw you from one of the cameras. That’s when I realized what the impulse of my hands to make fire caused. I rushed to where you were, even though the building was slowly collapsing around us. Eventually, I made way to your position and carried you to the ambulance; but I wanted to vomit at the result of my deed.”

After he’d told his summary of what happened, more than five minutes had passed and the atmosphere suddenly became chilly. Satoshi wrapped his arms around his shoulders. This foolish guy’s a pyromaniac! Once Satoshi had become aware of the man’s illness, he understood why he helped him recover from the disaster. The question was, why him; why not somebody else? He unexpectedly felt a strange feeling, like touching the center of a void.

His first thought was to ask Kazunari directly these questions he had in mind, but he refrained from doing so. He had to admit that the man had guts to tell him what he had done. He could rush out right now, look for a telephone and report to the police that he was the culprit, but he didn’t. He understood him perfectly. He was studying to be a psychiatrist and this was part of his major. His mind was open and if he was already medically suited to treat him, he would do it; even if it was for charity.

Satoshi’s voice had an undercurrent when he finally spoke, “You burned down your own company. Aren’t you suffering loss?”

He didn’t expect the man to laugh, but a chuckle left Kazunari’s lips. “I don’t really understand why people keep asking me about the loss of my stocks or the loss of the company. I mean, I still have millions saved up in different banks in case this or anything might happen. I’m not that stupid enough.”

He was still the same arrogant man that Satoshi met in the hospital. Who would have thought that the billionaire owner of one of the gaming industries was this thick-headed? Still, Satoshi wasn’t that easy to back down. He stood up and closed in to the man. “Why are you still here out in the open? I’m sure the forensics team already knows by now that you’re the perpetrator.”

His question earned him another chuckle. “What do you think the uses of my money are for?”
He stared at him. That comment was out of bounds. Satoshi didn’t know that there were still people who does things in their own way and even used money to cover up for their mistakes. All the while, Satoshi thought that the man was honest, but bribery was really stooping so low. Nonetheless, he was still amazed at Kazunari and his decisions in his life. He didn’t have the guts to do what the other could do - even if he did have money - he wasn’t that gutsy.

The complexity of humans’ minds was really hard to decode. Satoshi was astonished to know this person, especially since the man was prominent in the industry of Japan. He was rich enough to buy thousands of people in the country. It was something that he had never thought could happen to him. The man was stubborn and aggressive, but at the same time generous and it was really baffling.

With no answer from Satoshi, Kazunari again talked, “I’m sorry. Would you like to get inside? I have had my servants prepare us dinner.”

The rich man’s attitude was misleading. Satoshi was getting really confused in how to approach the man. He wanted to know about him, but his instincts told him not to pursue his intrigue. He wanted to reach out, but at the same time, there was the fear in his heart. He didn’t really understand his feelings, and as they ate in the long dining table, silence has set in and it was suffocating. His heart beat was fast and the pain that was throbbing in his temple wasn’t subsiding.

After the dinner that seemed to have lasted years, Kazunari asked Satoshi, “Where should we send you home?”

He stayed too long in the hospital that he had forgotten that he didn’t live in Tokyo anymore. How long has it been since he left the city? He struggled to remember, until at last, he realized that he had failed to remember that he was living with his grandparents in the province. “I need to take a call. Is that okay?” He dismissed Kazunari’s question in the hopes that he would still be able to contact his grandparents who, by now, were worried sick because of him.

The urgency in Satoshi’s eyes made Kazunari use his personal cell phone. He snatched the phone from Kazunari’s hand even before the latter was able to hand it to him. His hands were shaking in nervousness. What would he do if he learns that his grandparents had died of heart attack for not even letting them know what has had happened to him for the whole year of his disappearance? He tried to push the thought away, but it still occupied his mind as the phone just kept on ringing - until someone answered the phone - like the stars wouldn’t let the sun rise again.

“Hello?” It was his grandmother.

“Grandma, this is Satoshi!” He almost screamed in relief, knowing that his negative ideas were not true. “I’m really sorry for not calling you.”

He could picture the smile in his grandmother’s mouth as she replied, “It’s really good to hear your voice, son. What happened to you? Your grandfather was worried sick.”

“How’s grandpa? I got into an accident, but someone helped me. He paid for the bills and all. I think I had a temporary amnesia and only just now I remembered that I wasn’t living in Tokyo anymore.”

“Don’t worry about us. We’re fine here. I really hope you could get back soon.”

Satoshi sighed; he felt sad that his grandparents were missing him, but he had no choice yet. All his possessions were burned into ashes in the pyrotechnics that Kazunari made. “I will come home as soon as I can.”

“I understand, dear. We’ll wait for you. But, do keep in touch.”

After the call, Satoshi was able to breathe a sigh of relief. Still, he was torn apart because he wanted to see his grandparents again, but at the same time, he was all by himself in Tokyo with no source of income to get money for his fare back to the province. He wanted to walk home or do anything that he could just to get home. Thousands of ideas occupied his mind, but all of them were ridiculous. What could he do?

Just then, Kazunari appeared out of nowhere near his side. He only realized his presence when the man tapped him on the shoulder. “Are you alright?”

He knew deep inside that he wasn’t, but he answered:

“I’m alright. Unfortunately, I just remembered that I don’t live in Tokyo anymore. I had travelled here by train, I think. But I still can’t recall the reason for me being here.”
Kazunari glanced at his wristwatch. The hands pointed to seven forty. “Well, I would like to ask my driver to drive you there, but I just can’t risk your safety; after what I have done to you. I have a lot of available rooms upstairs. You can stay for tonight. Feel at home.”

---

His decision proved to be fatal for his part. That night, though Kazunari said that he would be having one of the unoccupied rooms, he was startled when the man said that the servants were not able to do the cleaning up that time and they had to share Kazunari’s room. He wasn’t dumb at all at what the man was thinking. He wanted him beside him, maybe because he wanted company; though the word company in Satoshi’s mind was quite different from the average person’s.

“What do you mean by that?” Satoshi asked indignantly. He wasn’t one to be annoyed easily, but not because they were both males doesn’t mean sharing a room with a stranger was… well, strange. He hadn’t even thought that if there was one person who should feel awkward in this situation, it should be Kazunari.

They were at the hallway of the second floor, left wing. There were no one in sight and though their voices weren’t that loud, Satoshi believed that they were echoing. Kazunari shrugged indifferently, as if it didn’t matter at all. “They were busy in the other wing that they were not able to fix what should be your room for the night. At any rate, what are you fussing about? I do not like any of these if you’re thinking that way.”

He had no choice but to let the argument go. It wasn’t going anywhere anyway. Kazunari led him to the second room to the right, and when the door was opened to let them enter, Satoshi’s eyes widened in awe. It wasn’t a bedroom; it was a chamber. It looked like it had been designed from the chambers of the kings in Europe. The room was vast and even shooting stars could stay there and live like it was the galaxy in its size. There was only one bed located at the center of the room and it could fit ten people in Satoshi’s observation.

There were pajamas at the foot of the bed; one was yellow with vertical stripes and the other one was plain navy blue. Kazunari gathered the yellow one and handed the other to Satoshi. It was uncomfortable to think that he was going to wear the clothing of another person. He sighed and gave in. After wearing the clothes that was a little bit tight and a little bit long, he walked to the edge of the bed and climbed. It was going to be a long night.

Kazunari took the left side of the bed and lied down his body facing the bed; his head facing the empty space in the left side. His hands were sprawled on the sides of his head and after lying down just a few seconds ago, Satoshi was able to hear loud snores. He chuckled quietly, amused at the man lying down just a few meters beside him. Was it a mistake to stay here? He didn’t know, but he was about to find out.

Kazunari woke up in the middle of the night. Remembering that Satoshi was lying right beside him, he shifted his position and saw that the other hasn’t moved an inch at all. Satoshi was still sitting down on the edge of the bed, staring at the wide window that showed the winking stars and the crescent moon. His body was illuminated by the glow from the moon and Kazunari couldn’t help himself and enveloped his arms into the other’s waist.

“Please let me do this, just for tonight.”

He buried his face at the crook of Satoshi’s neck as he waited for the latter’s answer.
Satoshi stayed still as he spoke; his voice warm and tender, “I don’t mind at all.”
It was the first time that he reached out. He couldn’t remember the last time he held someone like this, but he knew that this was more special than the others. Looking Satoshi from afar wasn’t enough and now that he was by his side, he didn’t know how he would be able to let him go when the morning comes.

He was frightened by the thought, but he tried to calm himself down. His mind was playing tricks on him, but he wanted to savor the moment. He attempted to listen to Satoshi’s heart beating and without him noticing it, the sun has risen and he had to accept that he had to let go of the person that wasn’t even his that day. The birds were now awake; their chirps were loud and cheerful, still it didn’t change the melancholy that he was feeling in his heart right then.

He cleared his throat. “Do you want some breakfast?”

There was no answer. He waited for a couple more minutes. He repeated his question, but there was still no reply. Though he was sad to let go of his embrace, he had to. He turned Satoshi’s face around and saw that the latter had already fallen asleep. His lips formed a pleased smile as he gently laid Satoshi down on his bed.
