So, midterms have ended and Haute Couture fashion week has commenced! A nice transition, if you ask me. I hope to comment on a few over this weekend, because I have no homework, and I look forward to it.
Just for now though, I wanted to post photos from Thimister's Haute Couture show. Quick background: Josephus Thimister, a Dutch designer, has been absent from the runways for ober a decade, but returned with a minimalistic collection inspired by World War I and the Czar Nicholas's son, Alexi. This could just be my recent obssession with old-fashioned military uniforms speaking, but I think it's my favorite show so far, and might hold that spot through the rest of the shows. Subtle, clean, and tailored to perfection, the garments matched minimalism with a feeling of almost poignant romanticism. I actually liked the menswear line more than the womenswear because of the breeches and knee-high boots - a winning combo in my eyes. And the knitwear blew me away, as did the tastefully splattered blood (is that even possible? Tastefully splattered blood?). Here are some examples of the garments shown:
Speaking of my old-fashioned military uniform obssession, it probably stems from the fact that I really have been watching a lot of old war movies lately: The Guns of Navarone, Stalag 17, From Here to Eternity, Casablanca, The Young Lions, to name a few. But I also FINALLY watched Inglorious Basterds, and it was amazing! Melanie Laurent and Christoph Waltz deserve every award in their respective categories. I know Christoph has been reaping plenty of awards, but as far as I know, Melanie hasn't, which is a shame. But I don't know if I'm speaking to prematurely (after all, I haven't seen Up in the Air or Avatar yet) when I cautiously say that I think Basterds deserves Best Picture over The Hurt Locker. I think it might just beat Pulp Fiction as my favorite Tarantino film...
