This has bothered me for some time now, and I figure that many of you read the same kid's books I did back in the day, so maybe someone remembers this.
Way back in the mists of time (4th grade, maybe?), I read or had read to me a somewhat surreal book, probably geared toward kids. The only things I remember about this book are as follows:
~ It was set in some kind of fantastical realm that I don't think the main character (a boy, maybe) was native to.
~ The main character and his party were going on some very long journey, possibly involving a boat
~ In the main character's party was a robot with no emotions
~ The party encountered a giant (female) spider that was going to eat them, but for some reason, the spider and the robot fell in love and the robot left the party to stay with the spider
~ Some time later, the party gets into trouble (fight? natural disaster?) on (I think) an ice field and they're saved by a giant robot spider because the robot and the spider from earlier decided that the best expression of their love was to forge themselves into one single terrifying steampunk abomination
This ringing any bells?
