“Marry me?”
“Don’t be ridiculous.”
“I mean it this time.”
“How many times”--
“I swear! I want to marry you. I want to be with you forever.”
“So you say now. What about when you lay eyes on a Sara or a Christen or a--a--”
“Nothing like that will ever happen again, Laura--you have my word. I would never hurt you like that again. Never.”
“I... don’t believe you.”
“Laura?”
“I can’t. I can’t do this again. I can’t risk it. And don’t tell me it’s not a risk. It’s always a risk with you.”
“Laura, can’t you trust me?”
“What a ridiculous question. No, Matthew, I can’t. Remember when I did trust you? Remember where that got me? I do. It’s not something I can ever forget.”
“I didn’t mean”--
“To let me catch you? Oh, I know.”
“I thought you’d forgiven me.”
“I tried, Matthew. But as it turns out, it’s impossible to get the image of you fucking another woman out of my mind.”
“I told you before, it was the heat of the moment, it”--
“It’s not enough anymore. I don’t think I ever really believed you. A kiss, maybe, could be an accident. But don’t you think that somewhere in the middle of fighting to get your belt off and your fly open it might have occurred to you that you were doing something wrong?”
“Why now? I thought we were past this. Why are you bringing it all back up now?”
“Because... because you had the audacity to ask me to marry you. As if you could be sincere. As if you expected me to trust you with my health and heart for the rest of my life. But I can’t do that. You’ve already shattered me into a million pieces, and I was never really put back together right. There’s no fixing that.”
“Laura”--
“No, Matthew. Just stop. It’s done. It’s over.”
“Don’t do this baby”--
“Just let me go. I don’t want to see you again.”
“Laura....”
