Whoa calm down - LOL - I agree it was a wonderful episode but I never had any doubt through all of it that Dean just slid into the existing story and that he was NOT responsible for the events. The moment that Samuel said he was working a hunt ... I knew that even with out Dean there, that Samuel's hunt would have lead inevitably to YED seeing Mary and from there to tragedy and the Deal.
That said I do think it was cruel how Dean had to learn about the deal and what happened to Sam, even though I understand the two reasons behind why it had to be that way. If Dean had not seen it with his own two eyes he might never believe it from Castiel, no matter what his father said to him before he died. I think also it was a calculated slim hope by Castiel that Dean would be able to learn more than the Angel's themselves knew.
I personally glad that what Castiel said was either you stop him (I assume he meant in a humane manner) or the Angel's will kill Sam. So much better than what John said imho.
