I am disnumerate in the sense that in writing down a figure I reverse the digits etc.
I didn't necessarily find maths hard at school, though did get extra tutoring for it for a bit. Brain can see the beauty of mathematics, but it is a bit like a specific lack of spatial awareness (maybe in a similar way to Marge's explanation) that I can't imagine what calculations of any complexity (expecially those containing characters more special than +,-,/,*,= do. If I remember then I can see what it should be like, in the same way that if I can remember a tune I can read the music a whole lot better.
My brother just sees patterns, I don't. He has an in-built perception of numerical relationships. I have a better chance of identifying or extrapolating thematic ones. But like with bits of other things I have learned, some things I do have to keep up with in order to remember how they work or go together.
I got a B at maths GCSE for producing outstanding coursework that did maths theory (we're talking outstanding in a GCSE sense, so A* but not great, but if you talk about topology at GCSE they like you) and being serious borderline flunk in the exam - not working the formulae / calculations I guess. My that was a long time ago.
Now I enjoy being able to do arithmatic and have no conception of what a statistical p-value etc. is.

Does that answer your question any?
