From George Carlin Uncensored on St. Patty's Day:
I don't understand this notion of ethnic pride. "Proude to be Irish," "Puerto Rican pride," "Black pride." It seems to me that pride should be reserved for accomplishments; things you attain or achieve, not things that happen to you by chance. Being Irish isn't a skill; it's genetic. You wouldn't say, "I'm proud to have brown hair," or "I'm proud to be short and stocky." So why the fuck should you say you're proud to be Irish? I'm Irish, but I'm not particularly proud of it. Just glad! Goddamn glad to be Irish!
Well, I continued my St. Patty's Day tradition of going over to Patrick's and having a few drinks. Of course, unlike last year, I did not get shite-faced this time. It was mostly rum runners, rob zombies, and rum & cokes all around. I brought the Paul Masson Gold Label, but we didn't break into that. I think everyone was having too much fun with the rum.
"Why is the rum always gone?" *staggers* "Oh, that's why."
But Friday night was really the best. Straight off from work, we went to see 300. That is, by far, one of the best movies I have seen in many years, possibly since 1999 (that's when my favorite movie came out). On the outside, the movie seems to be about the days of and leading up to the Battle of Thermopylae. However, that's just the story it tells, not what it is about. Not by a long shot. It just uses the story of the 300 Spartans and the few hundred other Greeks that held the pass of Thermopylae for three days as a vehicle, a storytelling device, for bringing the real themes to the forefront.
Ugh, I feel Dr. Rummage's English class coming back to me. True, the man is very intelligent and taught me the aspects of good storytelling, but damn if it isn't annoying sometimes.
And after 300, we went to Cheeburger. There's personal abuse in a box. Here was my choix du jour:
A Delirius (2/3 pound), medium with American and Provolone cheese, Bacon, Chopped Garlic, Jalapenos, and Teriyaki sauce.
Yum. Yum. My breath could fumigate a 3,200 sq. ft. house after that.
Saturday I went to Ryan's house. He needed some help moving some stuff out of his mom's house, plus it gave me a chance to see Torchwood, the Doctor Who spinoff. We really miss a lot of great shows living here in the United States. Of course, I wonder how many more we would miss living in Great Britain. Then again, almost all the shows I like are being simulcast in the UK.
Now that spring break has started, a lot of my friends have left town. Oh well. I'll be leaving town myself come next weekend. I have family that will be flying in from North Carolina, with a baby second-cousin I have yet to meet.
But, before that, I have to get through this week.
