Does anyone here know much about Halal meat? It has been my impression that Halal standards require that animals be raised humanely, free-range, drug-free, etc. I started questioning that a bit yesterday when I got a whole chicken for $4, and wondered how it could possibly be that affordable and still adequately ethically-raised.
Most of what I've found online about Halal standards make vague references to "humane treatment", but maybe not much more than that. This editorial from 2004,
Defining Halal: If it’s not organic, it’s not halal is a call for Halal standards to meet organic/free-range guidelines, and definitely suggests that much of what's sold as Halal may not meet the sort of criteria I normally look for from the folks raising the animals I eat.
Anyone have more solid information? (In the mean time, I did enjoy the $4 chicken in last nights fabulous Co dinner: tapas and paella. Also tried Moroccan dried olives for the first time -- so very tasty! Sweet and salty, like brined raisins.)
