The Pope's Dead

Apr 03, 2005 15:58

Pope John Paul II finally kicked the bucket. Everyone's now saying what a good person, a great pope, and charismatic individual he was. What I don't get, is why everyone suddenly forgot the fact that the pope was everyone's favorite person to like but disagree with? The man was a autocratic tyrant. He consolidated all the power of the Vatican to his office, made sweeping changes to the way the pope is elected that will only serve as a way for hardline candidates to circumvent the cardinal congress, and was blantantly stuck in a 1920s mindset. AIDSs flaring in Africa? Condoms aren't the answer, abstinence is! News flash, people aren't going to stop having sex when they have nothing else to lose or live for just because some old white guy says not too. Here's to hoping the next pope actually brings the church into the 21st century and isn't dead set on bringing back the glory days and demanding the world reshape itself to their desires.
