Since I was a kid I used to read lots and lots folktales and legends, which include those from China, Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia, Europe, Arab and many more. More important thing is that I do love happy endings such as that in Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, snow white and bla bla...
Hmm... Even though I am a Malay, I'm not that fancy with Malay folktales, prolly most of them end horrendously. For instance the story of 'Batu Belah Batu Bertangkup' (A rock hill that splits open and then closes, continuously, like eating something - well I don't know how to translate these phrase properly... Gomene for my poor English -_- "). The story tells about a mother who committed suicide by going into that rocky hill and then got squashed by that thing. The reason behind her suicide was that the mother disappointed with her children who had not left her any fish eggs, which she craved for a long time. It does sound stupid and scary, right? But there are lessons to be learnt in all Malay folk stories.
Until recently, I watched a good movie based on mostly Malay fairy tale characters called Magika. I have to say it changed my perspective towards Malay fairytales. Hehe... The movie is a brilliant musical movie directed by KRU from Malaysia and it is a comedy, if you understand their jokes... Hehe... Unfortunately, there's no English for the movie yet. But there's a trailer... Which has not been translated! Bwahahahaha
