Prior to my knee surgery, the orthopedist measured the circumference of my thighs to see if there was any muscle loss inbetween the intial injury and surgery. Fortunately, they were even. No muscle loss. After the surgery, the physical therapist measured my thighs again. I lost 1.5 inches of muscle in six weeks. That is only in my thigh. I lost quite a bit in my calf too. Right now I have one muscular leg and one skinny and flabby leg. Nice.
One of the points of physical therapy is to rebuild the muscle I lost, so I do an assortment of leg exercises and lift weights. Also, I ride a bicycle or use the elliptical machine, which works out both of my legs. The operated leg is starting to show a slight definition of a thigh, but the other one is causing problems right now. Because I need to work both legs, the non-operated leg continues to get stronger and bigger and now my pants are starting to get tighter around that leg. I don't think I can win.
