DIFFERENTIATED TASK

Aug 18, 2009 10:13

- Provide an example of a differentiated task for the different groups in the class

For Teacher Use:

Research Task: Compare and Contrast the different groups involved in the Boxer Rebellion.

Students are to research the role of and reasons for involvement of the following groups:

Group 1: The Dowager Empress Ci Xi

Group 2: The Boxers

Group 3: The Soldiers from the different Imperial nations

Each group will have specifically designed questions that will enhance their historical research skills and build upon their communication and social group skills. The differentiated task will provide ample opportunity for the different types of learners to display how they learn, including the presentation of their research material in their chosen form.

Each group will present a detailed discussion and justification of the role of the provided group in Chinese society to the class. At the end of the presentations, time will be provided for a class discussion of the presented material.

Class Teacher will place students in groups, to allow for differentiation in difficulty and require different levels of attention.

Whilst the presentation is centred on the factual historical detail of The Boxer Rebellion, the non-assessable post-presentation discussion, will allow students to display an understanding of the decisions of different individuals and how they impact upon history. It will provide an opportunity to empathise with the different groups in Chinese society, by providing an ethical challenge to their own pre-disposed beliefs.

There will be two areas for assessment:

1.    Peer Group Marking on the Individuals in each Group

2.    Group Mark given to each group by the teacher

For Students Use:

Group 1: The Dowager Empress Ci Xi

Evaluate the role of the Dowager Empress Ci Xi in supporting The Boxer Rebellion.

Assess her motivations and beliefs, discussing why she was involved in the actions she was.

Group 2: The Boxers

Describe the reasons the Boxers looked towards rebellion.

Who were they frustrated at and how did they aim to vent these frustrations?

Do you consider their rebellion to be a success or failure?

Group 3: The Soldiers of the Imperial Nations

Identify the different nations that sent troops to China.

Describe the soldiers that were sent- Visual aids can be used to assist.

Why do you think the different nations sent troops?

Focus on the Australian soldiers: Why were they sent? What did they look like? What was their role?
