Can't edit yet. this part got a little weird
The power was on when she woke back up. The bedside clock was blinking, she didn’t try to set it up because she wasn’t sure what time it was anyway. She could actually have toast and coffee that morning.
She sat by the window again while she tried to wake herself up. Instead she pressed her head against the window and fell asleep. She always felt lazier during this time. She’d probably end up taking at least 3 more naps before Ben got home. She woke up and stretched, then sat there. So bored. It’s always boring when Ben isn’t around. She turned to look back outside. The path he walked every day to and from work, the spot where she always meets him at when she just can’t wait for him to come home.
All of a sudden her nose flared. What was that smell? She licked her teeth and bared them at the window. She didn’t like it. It wasn’t supposed to be there. She was suddenly awake and heading for the door. Still in her silly candy pajamas and barefoot she stepped out into the cold air outside the apartment. Her arms were raised at her side trying to make herself feel bigger and tougher. Where was that smell coming from? It circled around the spot she and Ben were last night. How dare that smell mix into hers and Ben’s happy smell. The lowest growl she could manage rumbled out from her. Where are you? Show yourself so I can beat you back to where you came!
“Now, now. That’s not a very nice way to greet someone.” A very tall man in a suit stood a few feet in front of her watching her curiously. His features were very plain and his blonde hair slicked back.
Serafine felt her cheeks flush. Here she was standing outside in the cold fall air in her silly candy pajamas growling at the ground. What kind of opinion is he forming about her?
“Uh, I’m sorry. I’m looking for my dog.” She laughed nervously. “We play this game… and uh… Bye.” Serafine walked away swiftly. Going no direction in particular, just away from their building. Shit. Now what? She felt so scared. What did he mean greet someone? She wasn’t greeting anyone… just trying to get rid of that… smell. She looked over her shoulder to see the tall man walking after her. Without a second thought she ran.
The tall man chased her. Serafine panicked and tried to find away to turn around back to the apartment. She needed to get home safe. Home. With Ben. She stopped and turned on her heel and glared at the tall man still running towards her. She barred her teeth again and let the growl come out again. That’s when she smelled it again. The bad smell. It was this guy. He was getting closer, not at all phased at her now stand offish position. Her body lowered to the ground and she prepared herself. His running figure was also starting to get taller and not just that, his image started to blur the closer he got instead of getting clearer.
She felt all of her hair stand on end as the moment got closer and closer. When he was only a few feet away she jumped at him. Hitting him in the lower part of his chest she did almost nothing to knock him over. What did knock him over was the second impact of force that happened after Serafine hit him. She felt the weight behind her and got caught under it herself.
There was a snarling sound by her ear. She turned her head to see the pointy teeth. Her growl stopped and instantly became the high-pitched scream of a twenty-something year-old girl. She started to squirm, tried to get away. She felt the claws scrape against her arm from the second thing as she finally broke free and rolled off the guy in the suit and onto the pavement. She crawled away and started to run back to the apartment again.
She looked over her shoulder to see the thing attacking the man in the suit was a giant grey dog. She stopped and watched the dog maul the man in the suit. Not sure what else to do. When the dog was finished it started to jog over to her. The man in the suit, although she had just watched him get mauled looked completely unscathed. Even the suit looked perfect and wrinkle free.
She slowly backed away from the approaching dog. Putting her hands up in front of her and closing her eyes when it got to her. The dog sat down and panted, giving her a look that told her she better pet him for saving her. She placed her hand on the dog’s head and moved it down the back of its neck. When she looked back at the man in the suit she jumped, startling the dog into a bark. He was gone! She turned quickly and bumped right into him standing over her.
“It was nice to meet you Serafine.” He reached for a lock of her hair and held it in his hand for a moment. “I’m sure we’ll meet again sometime. Good luck.” He gave her a wink and a slight bow and faded away right in front of her eyes.
“Wh-What?” Serafine grabbed at the air in front of her and waived her arms around in the space. She stood there blinking until the grey dog nudged her leg with his head. “I need a nap.”
