The next morning Serafine woke cold and alone. She had the blankets tucked around her, but Ben had left. She got up with one of the blankets wrapped around her body and wandered the apartment looking for him. She found him in the bathroom with his back turned to the mirror as he tried to dab at his back with alcohol. He hissed with pain every time the cotton ball touched one of the cuts.
She sighed and walked into the bathroom, took the cotton ball away and started to clean the rest of his back herself. They stood in silence as she dabbed away. Him in pain, her in guilt.
“I’ll get you everything we need for tonight don’t worry.” Ben turned around to hold her hands in his and seriously promise her.
“Just don’t get into trouble.”
“We’ll get into even more trouble if I don’t get it.” He gave her a comforting kiss and put his work shirt on. “I’ll be back tonight.” He started to walk for the door but stopped halfway and turned back around. “I know you’re not in the best state right now, but if you can manage… you should try calling back some of those places you applied to last week. Maybe one of them will give you an interview.”
Serafine did her best not to roll her eyes. “I know… I was going to yesterday, but the power was still out and it was cold…”
He smiled, knowing how much she just didn’t want to talk to strangers. “It’s okay, but maybe someone tried calling yesterday, but couldn’t get through because of the power, so you are going to have to actually call everyone. Sorry baby, I’ve got to get going now. Love you.”
Serafine watched him go sadly, she pulled the blanket tighter around her and walked back to bed.
