At work
A few things about my work-in-progress:
It's not in verse.
It's like nothing I've ever written before.
I am starting to fall in love with my characters.
Also?
I am starting to fall in love with Scrivener for Windows. I downloaded the first beta version of it, and am enjoying using it thus far. I'd started writing the manuscript in Word, beginning with chapter one and moving forward, but I started to get nervous about my ability to write my way to the end of a manuscript, so I have, for the moment, decided to write the very shortest version of what will be a YA novel, and it is brilliant for that.
Right now, I write stuff down as a summary, split it into scenes or chapters as I go, et voilà: I am creating either the world's shortest novel or a rather pudgy outline. Once I get this version done, I will go back and flesh it all out better, but in the meanwhile, I am charmed by the application and by my characters, and I've become more confident that I will be able to work my way all the way through to the end of the story.
I view the process as akin to tracing the general design into bare rock - it will be etched more deeply into the stone on later passes. No NaNoWriMo for me, but I wish those of you who are doing NaNo all the luck and speed you require.
