Six Things on a Saturday

1. I had the great pleasure of attending Jennifer Hubbard's book launch party today at Children's Book World in Haverford, PA. It was lovely to see Jenn surrounded by so very many people, all so excited about her book. And her introduction and reading were wonderful, too.

2. I was fortunate enough to be in the company of additional writers whilst at Jenn's party - Angela (angeladegroot) came along with me, and I was happy to see Nancy Viau and Colleen Rowan Kosinski there, and to meet Cyn Balog and others. It was quite a turnout!

3. I purchased a copy of bostonerin's latest book, The Total Tragedy of a Girl Named Hamlet, and I'm very much looking forward to reading it. Something about her cover reminds me of one of my very favorite middle grade novels ever, Linda Urban's A Crooked Kind of Perfect - I suppose its the feet and colorful socks and the font color? Whatever it is, I like it.

4. Snow is falling. Snow on snow, although not nearly so much as in the areas to the south of us. It is lovely, of course, but it did make the roads a bit slippery.

5. I found that I actually enjoyed the first half of the new Emma series that began running last Sunday on PBS, and has already played out in full in the U.K. I didn't care for the beginning, with it's non-Austenian voice-over that I found quite a bit cloying/annoying, and its ham-handed way of chasing Emma's development from childhood through what I suppose was supposed to be adolescence (although simply keeping Romola Garai's hair down didn't clearly put that across for me). But it grew on me, enough that I've cheated (shh!) and watched the remained on YouTube in advance of it being on TV (or available in U.S. shops), and I found that I quite adored the ending, and Jonny Lee Miller's delivery of Mr. Knightley's rather romantic declaration of love quite won me over.

6. I have ordered a small leather-bound journal from Immortal Longings, which will be my new commonplace book. I used to keep one when I was in high school and college, and still have it here, but I thought it best to take up a new book at this point. My thanks to my friend Sara Lewis Holmes for reminding me about commonplace books in a post written earlier this month.
