So, I'm here in Chicago. Where the wi-fi completely let me down yesterday, causing me to be late responding to at least one Very Important Email, and to fall a wee bit behind on my CYBILS duties. I am now caught up. That said: Dudes, there are only 14 poetry titles nominated so far. I hope you will all take steps to rectify that. Nominations are for a shorter period this year, and it will be October 15th before you know it!
Last night, I heard a wonderful speech about the two known portraits of Jane Austen, and also about Jane Austen as a taker of portraits (through her prose). It was heady, fascinating, and fun. This morning, I learned some steps for English Country Dances. I think I might actually be okay at it, really. I learned 3 dances, although many more will be done tomorrow at the ball. And then I sat in a three-hour meeting for Regional Coordinators, and then at presentation after presentation. During the last one, I fired up my laptop for all that catching up,, since it was a musical performance to which I could listen without needing full focus, and for which I stayed well away from anyone so that my keyboard wouldn't annoy them.
The break-out sessions and plenary events here are all muy interesante: Some are purely entertaining, whereas others are highly scholarly. I've been heading to the scholarly ones. (Surprise! No? You know me too well.) Also? I've bought some books. And when I say "some", I mean a whole box full. They'll be shipped home, though, so I needn't schlep them. Good thing, too, since I only brought a carry-on.
