This past weekend Ken and I spent an inordinate amount of time at the movies.
The A-Team: extraordinarily awesome. If you check your knowledge of physics at the door, and you're willing to suspend your disbelief, you will have fun.
Bradley Cooper portrayed Face as a player with heart;
Sharlto Copley--of District 9 fame--played Murdock with just the right balance of crazy intelligence and flamboyance, and
Liam Neeson .. well, Liam is awesome in everything, but here he gave Hannibal a quiet confidence that leapt off the screen. Shit blows up! Twisty plot! A script full of one-liners that beg to be quoted! This, my friends, is the epitome of a summer popcorn movie. I will watch it again in the theater, and I'll buy it when it comes out on DVD. This one is a contender for my "top ten favorite movies" list.
The Karate Kid: a solid remake of the Ralph Macchio hit for the new generation. The story is as familiar as your favorite pair of jeans: boy gets bullied, wins girl, loses girl, gets girl back, and in the meantime learns how to Fight Back and beats the bullies at their own game. Jaden Smith--yeah, Will Smith's son--plays the boy and Jackie Chan plays the teacher. The film moves slowly, but that's okay, since we all know where we're going. This is a more-than-acceptable remake of an '80's classic. During the movie I practically felt a theater full of tweens fall in love with Jaden, and I imagine that his picture is hanging on hundreds of bedroom walls even as you read this. I predict that Jaden will go on to become a fine adult actor if he keeps his head on his shoulders and stays away from the Young Hollywood Party scene. While I probably won't see this again in the theater, I wouldn't mind renting it during a rainy Sunday afternoon.
