This month I am on my Newborn Nursery rotation and it feels like I've been here for ages!
Don't get me wrong I love going to deliveries, making sure the infants are indeed breathing, pink, and normal, and being the first one to diagnose conditions in a human being's life - truly incredible... but, it can be a moderately chaotic and messy job. In a morning I can round on anywhere between 2 and 20 babies by myself. Now, I like sleep as much as the next person, and getting up at 4:45 to go in and pre-round at the hospital is not my idea of a good time!! Thankfully it doesn't happen every day.
Interview season is also upon us! It's amazing that only a year ago I was travelling around and trying to figure out where to train for residency. Crazy.
A few of the best parts of the whole process are 1) During interview season here the residents have the interviewees over for dinner the night before, hang out and chat. Aka: free dinner and time to see friends. And 2) Free lunch on interview day! They usually cater really good food too - like today, when we had Indian catered... palak paneer, aloo gobi, tandoori chicken, mmmm
Oh, and it's also nice to meet the candidates and feel out who would be a good fit with our program, a nice person to work with, and someone to fill your tired little intern shoes! Realizing that you will not be an intern forever is wonderful!
In a couple of days we have a residency retreat. The program is putting us up at a nice resort for a night. I've heard it can be quite the party. Looking forward to having a day off too. I haven't had a day off in more than 2 weeks.
And my birthday is Sunday. I'll be the big 2-5.
