I read this while lurking quietly in neworleans but decided to come here and say that it sounds like great news! I dunno why, but I hesitate to post to the community when I'm just a visitor to the city a couple of times a year, especially about things like this that are so personal to the residents. A lot of my local friends (in Kentucky) think folks are crazy for wanting to go back, clean up and rebuild their lives but they're not looking at it as "home", they're just seeing it as some sort of resort/vacation area. At least I hope thats their problem, Id really hate to think that my coworkers and friends would so easily abandon their city if disaster struck.
I wish you much luck and love in your rebuilding and look forward to coming back as soon as its possible for me to do so!
Well, thanks for understanding. There's a joke going around amongst some of us... Living in new orleans is a lot like that old dumb joke; "How many Viet Nam Veterans does is take to screw in a lightbulb?" "You don't know, 'cause YOU WEREN"T THERE!!!" Most people who are from "Elsewhere"(as we call it!) really don't understand the loyalty & devotion that we have for our community, our culture, our history. We are all family in NOLA. You can feel that everywhere you go. It's like nowhere else in the whole world.
*Id really hate to think that my coworkers and friends would so easily abandon their city if disaster struck.* Yeah; unfortunately, we are seeing some of that happen amongst our ranks as well. We pray that they know what they're doing, that they'll be okay "out there"; Hope that they'll come to their senses and come on back home to us; And strive to get our great city on her feet again, so that they'll have something beautiful to come back to. As a few of us have been saying, Next Party's On Us!!!!!!!
A few of my friends have decided to stay where they evacuated to, at least for now but most are headed home whenever they are allowed and have the means to do so.
You can bet when they're back and I'm there, the party is on me! I owe a few folks a "bar tab" by me kinda night and I don't think Ive ever looked forward to spending money on people like I do on them, cause that'll mean they're "home" and safe :)
