Rejection slip: "A Killer Walks By"

Sometimes, I think the universe is a malevolent construct, and sometimes I think it is a machine, into which each thing entered must have something removed, in order to maintain equilibrium. My last LJ entry was about a previous story that I wrote and sent off; today I speak of another such story, returned to me rejected.

Seriously, the universe wants its In and Out boxes balanced.

Well, I'm rewriting a few bits and pieces of the story (things that have been bugging me about it since I sent it out previously) and I am going to go looking for a new market and get it off into the mail today if I can. I'll be hunting Duotrope to see if it is a fit to any of the anthologies now accepting submissions, and if not, start it on the rounds of the SF markets.

Odd moment of the day: the left lens of my eyeglasses popped out and went skittering off across the floor of a store I was in; loose screw gave way in my frames. Thankfully the screw stayed with the frame and I didn't have to go chasing it across the floor. I ended up sitting on the floor of the store using a keyblade point to try and get my glasses put back together. Seems to be holding, but I'll out a drop of super-glue on the screw to make sure it doesn't back out again.

On a side note, I am studying the sociological impact of the Hongdengzhao ("Red Lanterns", or female Boxers) who fought in the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1900; it's an uphill battle, since very little has ever been written about them. The best reference work I have found yet is Cohen's History in Three Keys, which covers them in detail. It's rather interesting work about a group that has largely been ignored by history. And considering how the Chinese viewed females at that time, the Red Lanterns seem to be an enigma of sizable proportions.
