Okay. Turns out that I could have repaired my PVC trousers ages ago if I'd put my mind to it. At least I didn't throw them away... Also, note to self - it's not necessary to use black thread to seal the seams of black trousers. If all goes well, the stitching won't be seen by anyone else, and it's useful to see where you've been when tracking back to fill the gaps!
Scary thing - these are a 36" waist. Mine is now 38" (*sob*), and yet I fit without undue effort (on my part or the stitching). I might even be able to use the pockets.
