I love avocado, but I used to buy them and let them rot because I'd have all of these good intentions for making burritos or guacamole, but, because I'm busy as well as essentially lazy, burrito/guacamole night wouldn't come before the avocado-fur would.
So now I just buy one when I do groceries and eat it plain on the same day I buy it. I think it's the part of the week I really look forward to, now. Nothing like digging into a bowl of straight-up avocado.
Of course, lurking in the back of my mind was the thought that avocados contain something like a billion calories, and I was scared to face that fact, but today I bit the bullet and actually looked up the nutritional information of an avocado. And, just to compare, the nutritional information of a big mac.
So it turns out that an avocado has about 250 calories. Which isn't a small amount, but it's the equivalent of less than half of a big mac and contains about 20 different nutrients including iron, magnesium, vitamins A, B, C, and E, and all kinds of crazy phytonutrients I haven't even heard of like lutein. I don't know what lutein is but apparently it's good for the eyes, so hey!
So there ya go. It's no worse than eating half a big mac once a week. I will continue to indulge weekly in these creamy calorie-laden fruits, feeling safe in the knowledge that I'm getting more lutein than I could shake a stick at.
I think I can hear my room-mate turning green just reading this post.... :)
