Birthday present 2005

This is way, way past time. But I want to have it down so that I always remember. Plus, this is just one example of when filmcritic was

I've got this thing. I don't work on my birthday. In fact, the very first class I ever skipped in college was the 9:00 am class on my birthday. A few years ago I was trying through superficial means to re-encourage myself in my PhD program. So that year I went to work. I was even in the middle of fire school, but February 16th was on a Wednesday that year so no class. None of that was really important.

After work Shana had a few surprises for me. The first was that she took me out to a wonderful dinner that I'm pretty sure she couldn't afford. She took me to the local Ruth's Chris Steakhouse for wonderful steaks. Seriously, amazing of her, she had no business doing that.

Afterwards we were headed back to her place and I was a little bit of a jackass. But in a playful way. See, I knew there was a surprise party coming but I told her I wanted to go to Starbucks for a coffee and to pick up some used coffee grounds. I expected her to say "no". She hesitated, but went ahead and took me anyway. I felt bad about that, because she had really outdone herself.

First of all there was delicious carrot cake. I love carrot cake.

I think in this picture she's scared of all the candles.
I've forgotten where she got it, but somewhere she got the email address of one of the guys in my fireschool and asked him to get in touch with all the others. So the next super-awesome thing was that half of my fireschool was there. Plus her. And her roommate was my good friend (& once and future roommate) Mark. Also my roommate at the time Mikey was there as were some other friends like Christian.
The theme was even "fireman-related"

Finally, she'd also either arranged for people to coordinate presents or she invited people who knew me. It was uncanny. My roommate got me a really cool wine/bar set. Christian and mark both bought me ammunition for my .45 (see user icon). I think Mark's ammo also came with the mini-bottle of Jack Daniels. Shana not only got me a bit of ammunition herself, but bought me my first membership to the NRA (plus a hat to prove it).

Anyway, it was really fabulous of her and I hate that I never typed this up before.
