You know those dreams where you show up to school and realize you don't have any pants on? Similar are the ones where you realize that you have a final exam tomorrow and you haven't been to class all semester. I have different versions of this dream that involve not being ready to do my firefighting job for one reason or another (no gear, broken gear, out of uniform. haven't shaved in a week...). Not A Dream:
Anyway, I was riding the fire engine the other night with the career guys. We had run only two calls all night ~22:00 and 01:00-02:00; both for fire alarms in high-rise (8-10 floor) commercial buildings*. I then woke up when the tones went off at 06:45 for an ALS (medical) emergency that they were sending the engine on. Change of shift is 07:00 so usually by 06:30 the new crew for the day has switched out their gear for that from from the day before. When I got to the engine the rookie I'd been riding with was standing there ( I think he has to get up no matter what because he's the rookie) and said a couple of times "You're not going with them are you?" He got me all thrown off for a minute since I hadn't had enough sleep. All of a sudden I realized that I was wearing the shorts I'd slept in and shower sandals. (This wasn't a problem at 01:00 since I just jumped into my turnout pants/boots to go on that call.) Since I wasn't dressed for it, I waved the new crew on as I picked up my gear that had been sitting by and hanging on the side of the engine and moved it all out of their way.
Wait a minute. Yes, I said gear.
So I didn't go on that call because I wasn't wearing the pants that were right there in my hand.
*sigh*
It was fine that I didn't go since it was change of shift. No one else from the day before had to go on that call since all of their replacements had arrived. Still it's the first call I've ever skipped and it was because of a sleep-induced brain-freeze.
*freakin' rookie* ;^) * - So, the 01:00 call: We got to the building where they're doing a lot of refurb work and found the glass front doors open. Captain Leete opened the Knox Box to get the building keys and found only a single key to a Master Lock. So when we got to the fire control room and found it locked we had no choice but to force our way in with the Hydra-Ram. Sadly there was no choice but to absolutely destroy that brand new door. :^(
The rookie got to do it. I just watched. Still pretty cool.
