1511 - Khair Beg, governor of Mecca, tries to ban coffee for fear it will assist in the generation of opposition to his rule.
1587 - Sheikh Abd-al-Kadir writes "No one can understand the truth until he drinks of coffee's frothy goodness."
1600 - Originally, Pope Clement VIII was going to make coffee a part of the threat of the infidels.  However, after tasting it, he decided to baptize it, in order to make it an acceptable Christian beverage.
1652 - First coffeehouse opens in England.  Eventually, these places are dubbed "penny universities" due to the price of a cup of coffee, and the intellectual atmosphere.
