The Miss Portland Diner

Apr 15, 2008 09:08

After looking at it for months under a blue tahp, the finally moved the Miss Portland Diner yesterday.

Given away by its owner, the town solicited bids and finally came up with a buyer from NJ. The only saving grace in that is NJ is a great place for diners.

But all winter long, the Miss Portland languished, under a green tarp, then a blue tarp to cover the other tarp, and in a parking lot off Marginal Way in Portland. It was right across from the Whole Foods store. It's likely you missed it if you drove by it. It's lucky it didn't get scrapped.

But the owner finally closed on the land and they had actually poured a foundation for the diner and yesterday, as I was driving to work, I noticed "Hey, they took off the tahp!". I also noticed a large truck was nearby. On my way home from work, I found it was gone from storage. It was, however, sitting on new pillars and poured concrete foundation next to the new building on Marginal Way. It's dwarfed by the new building, but it's there nonetheless.

I took pictures which I present here. This shot is the best of them (also beyond the cut), but it was with my camera phone.

I'll update the progress as I see it and will try to take pictures on the days I'm commuting in or out of Portland. I'll try to make sure my still camera has batteries in it. Doh! I tried to take pictures with the real camera this morning, but my batteries were dead.

I was very surprised that there was very little local coverage on this move. But a Boston station picked up the story (warning, video loads automatically with advert first) and Maine Today also picked up on it.

Please feel free to filter the tag 'miss portland' if you don't want to read my updates about this.
