Love letter to San Diego

Oct 24, 2007 01:44

I just got off the phone with the folks back home.  My mom just got back from dropping my youngest sister off at an evacuation center with lots of bottled water.  Instead of worrying about missing homecoming, my little sister is volunteering at one of the evacuation centers.  I'm so proud of her.  In the meantime, her school campus has been turned into the Red Cross volunteer organization center.

I've been spending the past day and a half glued to the computer screen, particularly http://www.10news.com  and  http://sosdfireblog.blogspot.com.  I know  I'm not there seeing it in person, breathing the smoke, but seriously, my hometown rocks.  Everybody's coming together and helping each other out.  The evacuation center at the Qualcomm stadium, which is also acting as a distribution center for the other evacuation centers, has announced no further donations are needed unless specifically requested.  How many disaster areas have you heard of where people are saying, "thanks, but people have donated enough already.  We'll let you know if we need any more"?

Thousands upon thousands of people's homes are in danger.  Over 500,000 people evacuated!  The amount of destruction is devastating, and we know it will get worse.  But as of yet, there has been only one casualty directly related to the fires.  Why?  Because people are organized.  Because the spanking new Reverse 911 alert system is letting people know they should evacuate in a timely manner.  Because people are keeping their priorities straight and remembering that their lives and the lives of their families are more the most important thing.

In the midst of tragedy, people are showing the best of themselves.  I love you San Diego.
