As predicted by
fragmentedsky I found myself shrieking with glee (much to my younger brother's amusement/annoyment) when Sawyer (uh-uh - not Sawyer, but James! Or Jim as he is often - much to my distress - known) turned out to be a cop. It was a rather unexpected turn, and as such it pleases me, even though American - or any - cops are not really my favorite kind of characters. What did make me squee and shriek and spread glee all around the room was the fact that Sawyer’s (what the hell, he’ll always be Sawyer to me) partner was none other than Miles himself. I love Miles, and I think he and Sawyer make one hell of a team. Two deadpan snarkers for the price of one!
Two questions, though. Did Sawyer actually screw that woman, apparently called Ava, while half the LAPD was watching and listening? And what the hell was he up to in the airport elevator where he really seemed to make a conscious effort to help Kate escape? Is that how a proper police man behaves, I ask you?
It’s how Sawyer behaves, though, and I love Sawyer, so whatever. And how pleased am I that in the ALT-verse he’s on the side of good? Well, I’m pleased for his sake - I maintain that con men are way more fun to watch than cops. Still, I am rather happy that he still have issues with the real Sawyer, aka Anthony Cooper, aka (supposedly - who knows with the ALT?) Locke’s dad. It’s too early in the season for everything to be neatly resolved, and this episodes leaves me hopeful that we’ll get to see more of Sawyer in the side-flashes to come. However, I am relieved that he ‘fessed up to Miles. And that he tried to apologize to Charlotte, even though she turned him down, the stupid bitch.
I shouldn’t say that. I adore Charlotte. Anthropologists FTW! BUT - and I have complained about this elsewhere, but I’ll do it again, ‘cause I’m a whiny bitch - it still makes no sense for a British anthropologists to equate anthropology with archaeology, as Charlotte obviously does. That’s an American thing, not something she would have picked up at Oxford. Funny thing is, a lot of people complain about this seeming continuity error, but if she HAD been US trained, it would have made perfect sense for her to be digging up polar bears though she calls herself anthropologist. My bet is that the writer/s involved in this didn’t know that there’s a marked difference between American and British/European anthropology, and just went with the division into sub-fields existing in the US.
Aaaaanyway. I know that quite a few people were expecting the mystery date to turn out to be Juliet. I had been accidentally spoiled, which should have pissed me off, but it was such a minor thing and it prevented the disappointment that would have followed had I been expected Juliet to show up. As it was, I found it rather amusing to watch Charlotte and Sawyer together. And while I don’t really sympathize with Charlotte’s reasons for turning him down. Yeah, okay, he was harsh when he threw her out, but MAJOR TRAUMA! To quote Buffy: for someone who teaches (in this cases, studies) human behavior, you might try showing some. Still, it’s in keeping with Charlottes character - which I do love - and as we all know, Sawyer can’t be dating a red-head when he’s waiting for his true, blonde love to show up.
And she has better show up. Now, I am actually happy she didn’t in this episode. That would have been… too easy, too expected. That being said, if the series ends without her running into Sawyer, I will be beyond pissed. Seriously. Suliet OTP! It’s enough that they exchange a few words, she tells him they should have coffee sometimes - and we will know that everything will be all right, much like that scene at the end of Sliding Doors where the guy tells the girl that nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition. You see it, and you know things will work out.
And this leads me to my complaints with this week’s episode. Skate. What the hell? Skate is dead. Skate is over! It should be over. Shouldn’t it? Apparently not. See, I was okay with a bit of tension in season five, because of how things ended between Sawyer and Kate. It’s only natural things would be a little weird at first when they were united three years later. But he chose Juliet, and now that she is dead and he is not supposed to go traipsing after Kate again. C’mon! Wasn’t this made abundantly clear in What Kate Does? Damn straight it was!
But still. Suddenly there’s the looks, and the fondling of old dresses that should have decayed long ago in that tropic climate, and what is up with that?
Yeah, I used to Skate. That was a long time ago. How long am I supposed to pay for that one action? (Heh. Sandman reference!) Back in the days I complained that the love triangle should have ended in I Do (3x06), when Kate and Sawyer got it on in the bear cages. But that was before Suliet, and now I am of the very, very firm opinion that What Kate Does should have settled all remaining questions about the love of Sawyer’s life.
TINY SPOILER ALERT! In the following paragraph I’ll talk about a small hint about the finale dropped by Cuse or Lindelhof (it’s really very small, just about what kind of fans might be less pleased with the show’s conclusion). Scroll below the red text to return to non-spoilery stuff.

Okay? Here goes. Apparently Skater and Jaters might be disappointed. Now, this is perfectly fine with me. As the careful reader might have inferred from reading the above, I am so tired of this contrived lover triangle that I could puke. But why does it even have to be said? I repeat: SKATE SHOULD BE OVER! *mutters darkly*
These things considered, it worries me that Sawyer ran into Kate again at the end of the episode. Also, I read some blog where some chick speculated that Jack is the one Juliet will have coffee with, and that she is David’s mom. Eek. No. No. No.
Talking about couples, do you suppose that Miles’ girlfriend might be a certain Ana Lucia? *shrugs* This is Lost, after all. Seems like the kid of thing they’d pull.
The fact that Sawyer’s playing Locke against Widmore pleases me to no end. It didn’t sit right with me, him siding with MiB, not any more than him siding with Locke in season four - and of course, he didn’t really back then. Though it seemed odd that the episode ended with him telling Kate that they would take the sub instead of the plane, like that was some kind of grand and startling revelation. Bit anticlimactic, perhaps? Besides, is it very easy to drive a sub? I’m thinking no.
Who’s side is Widmore on anyway? Considering the sonic fence, I’d say that’s a no on Team MiB. Then again, when Miles was recruited by Naomi on Widmore’s behalf, he was ambushed by one of the guys who were with Ilana (before they were killed by Smokey), who told him he was on the wrong team. So that’s a no on Team Jacob as well? Who the hell knows. Maybe he just has his own agenda. But then why would Jacob (if that was Jacob) want Hurley to adjust the signals of the lighthouse to guide him to the Island (if Widmore was the guy Jacob said was coming)?
It says quite a lot that in spite of this being a Sawyer-centric episode, and in spite of me loving Sawyer to pieces, I found myself occasionally wondering what Ben was doing at the moment. Maybe we’ll know next week - I’m hoping for some Ben/Richard interaction! Incidentally, I’m having these wistful visions of Hurley going “yeah, so you totally don’t remember being shot by Sayid when you were a kid?”, and Ben going “huh?”. And then maybe they can address why he doesn’t remember Juliet, Sawyer, Miles and Jin. Okay, he forgets about Sayid, as Richard said he would, but what about the others? They lived together in Dharmaville for three bloody years!
Short notes in closing:
Sayid and Claire keep straight on freaking me out. Come back to yourseves! Someone save them!
MiB has mommy issues? Saw an icon making fun of this, and it made me giggle. Lost is the ultimate daddy issue show!
