Room 214 [afternoon/evening]

Mar 07, 2008 17:01

Pam, naturally, knew what today was, but she hadn't expected anyone else to remember. It wasn't like she went around telling people, 'Oh, by the by, Friday? I'm going to be seventeen!' or anything ( Read more... )

Jim knew that he needed to do something special for Pam's birthday. He wasn't sure what that something special would be until earlier. Fortunately, the people he called were more than happy - no, really, ecstatic - to help out.

Jim wasn't sure why they kept their costumes, but he was glad that they did.

"Thank you guys so much for doing this," Jim said, passing around a packet with some lyrics printed out. "First round's on me next time we get the group to the bar."

"This costume alone is worth at least three rounds," John said, taking up a packet and flipping through. "Especially given these songs..." He was very happy his girlfriend wouldn't bear witness to the event.

"Glory, I'm just happy not to be a horse," Karal said, fiddling with his hat before looking through the packet. "Anything I get to do as a person is wonderful!" He frowned. "Even singing these."

"It could've been worse," Jim said. "If you were a horse, I might have still bribed you with an apple to wear the hat."

The quartet gathered around Pam's door with Jim taking the lead to start with.

"If I should stay,
I would only be in your way.
So I'll go, but I know
I'll think of you ev'ry step of the way."

It wasn't a very appropriate song for their relationship, but it was funny to get these guys to sing it. That was an appropriate trade, he felt.

Karal stepped forward, and it felt extremely weird to be singing this to Jim's girlfriend, but it was her birthday, and important, so he gave it his all.

He even put one hand over his heart.

And I will always love you.
I will always love you.
You, my darling you. Hmmmmmmm.

John stepped forward, looking forlorn, hat lowered to his chest.

Bittersweet memories,
That is all I'm taking with me.
So, goodbye. Please, don't cry.
We both know I'm not what you, you need!

He stepped back, leaving a dramatic pause before the chorus.

Gavin stepped forward, still clearing his throat in preparation for what he was about to do.

He spread his arms wide, looked up to the heavens and closed his eyes, trying to sound both emotive and powerful.

And I will always love you.
I will always love you!

Gavin was pretty sure he'd just popped a few blood vessels but he skittered back into his place in the line.

Karal was very happy to be moving onto the next song, and he might have been casting Gavin odd looks while he started them off.

They were having trouble getting past the dopey smile, though, because Jim and Pam were adorable.

He stepped forward, dropped to one knee, and swept off his hat, holding it out and waggling it while he sang.

Happy birthday to you.

John was a little worried about the looks between Gavin and Karal, and hoped Inara already knew.

He thought of free booze as he joined Karal in a hat-sweeping kneel.

Happy birthday to you...

Jim was trying not to look at anyone but Pam and he joined his fellow barbers on a knee with a sweeping hat.

Happy birthday, dear Paaaaaaaam...

And Gavin found himself back on one knee, looking squarely at some spot on Pam's wall.

Happy birthday toooooooooo youuuuuuuuuuuu

And he finished with a very sloppy hat twirl!

Once the guys got reassembled, they started in on their next song. Of course, said song was a little different than the first and Gavin demonstrated that by doing an oh so smooth except not slide out in front, nearly tripping over his own feet but turning that into an unbalanced spin.

The right stuff
The right stuff
First time was a great time
Second time was a blast
Third time I fell in love
Now I hope it lasts

And he danced back into line.

Jim kind of skipped out ahead, tipped his hat over his eyes in a way that would be badass if it were the late 80s or it wasn't a barbershop hat, and continued the song.

I can see it in your walk
Tell 'em when you talk
See it in everything you do
Even in your thoughts

He hopped back into line.

For some reason, Karal found himself sort of skipping about in front of the others, hat tipped right back on his head.

And pointing at random parts of Pam's room.

You got the right stuff, baby
Love the way you turn me on
You got the right stuff, baby
You're the reason why I sing this song

He was more than happy to surrender centre stage...floor...to someone else.

Thrilled, John leaped forward for the sappy bit, doing his best to seem really soulful, closing his eyes tightly and gripping his hat to his chest as he sang.

All that I needed was you
Oh girl, you're so right
Said all that I wanted was you
You made all my dreams come true

He rejoined the others before starting the chorus off with:

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh

After promising more drinks than he could likely afford to his fellow barbers, Jim watched them leave before he followed Pam back into her room and closed the door. "In case you didn't get the picture so far, happy birthday."

Pam's answer was to go up on her tip-toes and kiss Jim.

Jim continued to wish her a happy birthday with his tongue. It was the least he could do.

"Thank you," Pam mumbled when she paused to breathe, playing with his lapel. "You so did not have to do this, but it's the best present ever."
