Is Livejournal having another DDoS attack, or has this connection been slow? Is someone digging a hole under the castle? I don't know.
Today I went to the anime club, but the anime I watched weren't too good. There were, as follows:

A) Squid Girl - generic moe stuff about an invader from the depths who's super cute and super smart and causes trouble

Oh Yao Yao, what do I say?
A) Kiku/Yao. What can I say? They look good together. Especially undressed. Rambunctious, youthful, impulsive Yao with quiet, contemplative, Gumpa Kiku. The nature of the relationship between them as people has shifted from mentor and student, to secretive courtly love, to a rake and courtesan who is the object of his desire (is that the right term?), to enemies, to two people with feelings of begrudging acceptance.
Since these two don't age like humans do, this has been possible. There's a great potential for "angst" and dare I say, sleaze.
I am reading a book about Chinese prostitutes in Dalian, which is on the Liaoning peninsula (sound familiar?). The city attracts visitors from nearby countries, and you know what that means. I wonder how a Hetalia fic concerning that topic (of Karaoke bar hostesses and their clients) starring Yao would be received, given the unfortunate historical implications that occur in any fictional works that associate Chinese women, Japan, and prostitution. You can see what the reaction by the CCP was to Memoirs of a Geisha :/
There's a great deal of scholarly work about the relations between the two real life countries. The good and the bad thrown in; it's more complex than most Hetalia fan opinions have expressed (but further investigation might reveal enlightened opinions). Even from reading translated comments on Chinasmack pertaining to Japan there's comments of mockery, comments about adult video girls, comments of outrage, and comments bemoaning how China falls short in certain areas compared to it. But that's real life and then there's Hetalia and I should avoid putting "tsundere" behavior in a fic about personified nations who in real life have thorny relations.
I like almost any pairings where Kiku is paired with a girl, and if that means genderbending, so be it. I like girl Yao; if he were a woman, he'd be the most badass woman ever.
I know it's politically-incorrect (especially coming from a Chinese-American), but Kiku looks so handsome in his military uniform, like a Prince, and I think such a prince would snag a fine Princess if he'd stay on his best behavior. Which certainly hasn't been the case (understatement). So he should try harder next time. Put a little youthful spring in his step. Leave a sack of radishes on Yao's doorstep.
End headcanon. Sorry if I sound incoherent or naive regarding the two countries :|
B) I can't decide. Um, since there's dark/edgy fanworks with the pairing that I'm very fond of, Arthur/Yao. Pocketto's strips have been translated on kouchagumi.
Hong Kong, man.
There seems to be a sub-genre in yaoi works (Roukaku no Reijin and Hoshi no Yakata for example) where a Chinese pretty boy becomes the sex slave/servant of a boyfriend from a country with a greater level of industrialization. That includes Britain. Geezus.
But there's also seems to be a genre where a Japanese pretty boy has a European/American boyfriend who dominates him, too. Take Maiden Rose for example.
C) Kiku/Taiwan.
But mostly, the anti-ship status is "in-universe". I hope that the big name fans for this pairing in the Japanese fandom aren't Nationalistic People (with a capital N) and think the people of China and Korea are being ~whiny~ over Japan's war crimes during WWII and think Taiwan is better "behaved". That would be terrible.
However, I think they'd make a great otaku pair. And I like the genderflipped version of this pairing because the power dynamic is different what happened to gender equality.
D) He's more aware of any negative perceptions other countries have about China than anyone suspects. I wasn't too happy when someone on the main comm said he liked to wear shirts with Chinglish on them.
E) Sweden. I can't see their personalities being compatible because Sweden would be so cold, and silent. China isn't known for it's relations with Sweden. Well, they're trading right now, so who knows.
