Katie's party ending of doom!

Aug 10, 2003 23:39

So last night was Katie's barbecue at her house, as a large part of my readership probably knows because they were there. Nevertheless, there shall be filling in for those out of the loop, because though the party itself was pretty standard fare, the ending made for glorious awkwardness.

So yes, Katie was to have a lunch-ish BBQ and pool party yesterday, and Robin was supposed to be in charge of invitations, because from what I understand it was his idea. Katie was rather distraught, however, to find that as of the day of the party, Robin had done just about nothing, and she had no supplies, and a serious salvaging effort was in order. I did what I could with phone calls, and rallied a decent number of troops. Robin also made some phone rounds, and the hope was that these people would also bring more people with them. You know, people who are also Katie's friends. That stipulation was the tricky part.

Shopping and preparation forced the start time to 5 pm, and of course no one but me arrived before 6 pm, but people started filing in pretty steadily until we balanced out at a nice group. As I recall it (and please don't get feel left out if I forget...): Katie, myself, Robin, Janine, Tanya, Scott, Becca, Dane, Adam, Matt, Nina, George, and I feel like I'm forgetting someone, so if so, apologies. Anyways, that was all well and good, and there was cooking and eating and spa-ing and swimming and merriment for all. I'm not sure what time, though, probably around 9-ish, the second wave started coming in. Greg Poppe, Danika, Sharon Chin, Paul, Carl, Amber, and Bonnie. Some of these are people Katie just doesn't know very well, but who are cool anyways (Greg, Carl, Amber, Bonnie). Some are people who Katie really didn't get along with so well in high school (Danika, Sharon). And past that was the one that made Janine specifically uncomfortable (Paul)...from what I understand there's some history then, but I don't know any details, so I shant speculate. The end result, though, was Katie getting annoyed, and Robin and Janine leaving. So began the exodus of the 1st wave friends (the people who are actually Katie's friends). Pretty soon, Tanya and Scott were gone too, and Nina and George and left a while before too.

Then more came. Seth Brink, who I'm not sure how Katie feels about. I don't think they're best buddies exactly. And then Jennifer Paul, and it all went to Hell. Jennifer Paul and Katie apparently used to be best friends, and then very abruptly, they weren't, and there's not really much happiness between them these days. The funny thing was that right after she saw Jen Paul there, Katie checked her cell phone messages and found one from Jen saying "I was thinking about you and I've wanted to call you but I've been really busy but we should talk. And oh! I heard there's a party at your house tonight so I think I'll stop by!" And then when she saw Katie there, she just sort of nodded and grunted and didn't acknowledge her further for the rest of the night, which further infuriated Katie. It contradicted the message, it wasn't even common courtesy (this was Katie's house, and she never should have been there in the first place).

Yeah, so the angriness just grew to the point that I'd never seen Katie so intensely angry before. It was pretty impressive, and finally people were just sort of herded out because she said her dad came home and wanted to sleep, so no more noise allowed. I don't know if that was actually true or not. Maybe partially...like, he'd prefer it but he wans't forcing it. Still, it was a pretty awkward and horrible ending, and people who were there just shouldn't have been. Katie was like, "These are the people who made fun of me in high school, and now they come to my house, and they don't even acknowledge me." It's pretty ridiculous, I'd say, and as Katie's real friends diminished in numbers, she just got more aggravated, which is totally understandable.

Anyways, though, interesting night. Good party before the weirdness.

And by the way, Katie dropped a whole lotta money paying for ALL of the food and supplies by herself and nobody at the party paid her back anything at all because she couldn't bring herself to ask people. So if you want to be REALLY cool and make her REALLY happy and feel better about the night, you should give her $5 or $10 to help cover expenses.

P.S. On top of the Mirwais song, I'm totally listening to great horrible songs, like Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" and Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart": total bizarre 80's fare, all thanks to the Random function on ye olde mp3 player.
