journalling vs blogging?

Apparently I'm weird in that I treat my blogs like a journal (diary).

surely you know my opinion on this from my openly honest nature and the xkcd comic i link from my profile, but honestly? i mean, i write for me. sure, i hope that it has some side-effect/residual benefits for my friends, but hell yeah, reading it years later---this *is* my long-term storage!

it's *your* journal, do what you want with it. let people be surprised, but don't let them drive, this ride is yours...

my $.05 (i've been doing this since 1997. surely i get bonus points/longevity pay?)

Yeah... Predictable response from you. ;-) I think I'm not 'splaining myself very well, sigh. I wouldn't change what I'm writing, regardless of the audience. I write what I write because I want a record of it. So in that sense I'm writing for myself, yeah. But if it were only me reading, ever, then I'd quickly get bored. It's the reactions and responses from others, the writing as a catalyst, the dialogue rather than a monologue, that interests me and keeps me writing. I can hold a monologue in my head, why go to the effort of writing it down? Sure, ok, to read again in later days, but I can't actually interact with my future self, see the world from her viewpoint and learn from our differences like I can with other people. So in that sense I'm writing for others, to get a reaction, a response, an interaction ( ... )

the more i've thought about it, the more i've realized you're right. thanks for bringing it to my attention.

and, i've been putting my diary on the web since 1997. it wasn't really the way we blog today--there was no link to it from anywhere except an email i sent to you, and there was no feedback. but yeah, it's all up there. i don't think google ever found it, or at least, doesn't return hits on some unique phrases in it. so...yeah, maybe archived, i wasn't really hiding from that, i just didn't want people i was writing about to read it (at first). or i thought it was too dumb to share. but maybe 7 people read it at the end, and they all seemed to enjoy it. so it wasn't too bad. except that it no doubt fed into the robin situation, since she mistook what i said in it, frequently. sigh.
