Because you so know that's exactly what they looked like. Heh.
I made it to skip=200 on my flist before we convinced Donny to go to bed so Amy and I could watch 4x02 "The Fires of Pompeii". Jim is out of town (which is one of the real life things I need to blog about, so you will understand one of the reasons I've been so quiet) so we teased him over AIM that he should be jealous that we got to watch tonight. (He countered that he got to watch Star Wars on a HD big screen TV in his hotel room. Man, where were hotels like this when I was traveling for work?)
In short, although I love Rose ... will always love Rose ... and want Rose to come back to stay with the Doctor forever and ever ... in just two short episodes, Donna Noble has somehow become one of favorite companions. Ever. Squee!
PiC was great, but this ... was absolutely brilliant. I lost count of the number of times I had to back the video up because I missed bits of dialogue. The whole episode just seemed so full. The writer, James Moran, gets my kudos for a great script. Has he written any other episodes?
I know I'll have more to say about it later, after I've had time to digest it -- and especially read other people's reactions -- but for now, I'll give my bulleted list of things I loved:
** The "Latin comes out sounding like Celtic" bit had me LOL'ing more often than it probably should have, but it totally cracked me up. So cracky and funny and clever. No matter how often they did the joke, I kept laughing. (And yeah, I'm hoping I'll read other reviews and find I'm not the only one. *g*)
** Donna's bitching out the cult even as she's tied down and about to be sacrificed -- heh, it's official, I absolutely adore this woman.
** Donna's "Never mind us", when the Doctor explains they won't survive saving the world. And especially the fact that she pushes the lever with him so he doesn't have to do it alone. Good God, I love everything about her. (And yes, the parallels to Rose here are freakishly striking.)
** "You fought her off with a water pistol. I bloody love you!" And that right there, cemented Donna in my heart. She just voiced the opinion of every single person watching the show. *g*
** The ongoing discussion/argument between the Doctor and Donna about why he couldn't change history and save everyone was very well done. I really liked these scenes, both Donna's getting angry with him because she didn't understand his attitude, and his ultimate explanations. And you could just see it's killing him to have to do it, but he doesn't have a choice. Except, of course, she's there at the end to show him that maybe everything doesn't have to be black and white, that maybe he can salvage a little bit of his heart and soul at the end. And that makes Donna very, very good for him.
** And finally, because I have to get my Rose mention in -- she's a prophesy! Squee! OK, OK, so they didn't say, "She'll be with you forever and ever in all her wolfy semi-immortality and help you repopulate your species", but heck, I'll take "She is returning," over, "The valient child who'll die in battle so very soon," any day. *bg* (And wouldn't it be wonderful if they countered the first heartbreaking prophesy with a second one that turned out to be happy? Y/Y?)
** Hmm, I notice my list of initial reactions don't mention much about the Doctor. Could I just say "everything" here? Because he was everything that makes the Doctor, the Doctor. And that was just plain awesome. Plus ... man, did he look good. *g*
Oh, DW, how I've missed you!
