So the guy at the games shop was incompetent. I guess I really shouldn't be surprised at this.
Picked up "Shadow of the Colossus" earlier and, since my father-in-law has a 60 foot television screen with super high-def and widgets, I asked what I would need in order to be able to run the game in progressive scan mode. His response was a set of $60 cables which they don't even sell... Knowing that audio/video equipment pretty much comes in the "how much money do you want to throw at it" price range I rephrased my question asking what I need to be able to run in progressive scan.
Oh, nothing. Just the cables you already have.
Hmm. Not that set of cables you have down their for $10 then?
No, but you won't get the quality unless you get the $60 Monster cables.
Which you don't sell?
Yep.
Yeeahh... OK. Thanks. Bye.
So, of course, I take the PS2 over to parent's place, hook it up and, what a surprise, no progressive scan.
Current theories:
1) The guy was an idiot and really shouldn't have been working in a game shop.
2) The guy works part time at the shop down the road that sells $60 Monster cables.
Maybe I'll try again later (with a set of $10 or $15 cables...)
