Somebody set up us the bomb

(Apologies for the title, I recently found the WikiPedia article which even has a, perhaps more intuitive, translation of their own.)

So, this morning we had a 2.1 earthquake. Why did we even notice this? Because it was 3 miles from our house... Still not that noticeable but still, we got our own personal earthquake! Yay! :/

In your geek news for the day: I finished writing chess for the ToothyGDL (ToothyCat Games Description Language) yesterday. You can play it here if you feel like a game of chess, but you'll need two people (or you could play it Geri's way) since I'm not even going to pretend I can write a computer opponent.

In more or less geeky new depending on your viewpoint, I finished Doom 3 on Saturday... It was actually pretty good, although obviously if you are not into first person shooters this is not the game for you. It managed a good level of suspense and, really, the people who were complaining that you can't use the guns and flashlight at the same time were really missing the point. One thing that actually surprised me was the difficulty level. When I started I chose the highest difficulty (short of the locked 'Nightmare' mode) and was partly expecting to have to start again a short way in, but really it didn't give me that many issues. The atmosphere was really well maintained and other than a couple of cases of "why, exactly, did these people keep zombies in their cupboards?" it was pretty internally consistent too.

Too throw myself to the complete other end of the game playing spectrum, I'll be picking up Shadow of the Colossus later (I'm really glad they dropped the "Wanda and the Colossus" title). Maybe I'll even finish it before racerxmachina gets here next weekend so I can hand it over to her. Possibly not, but I think I'll get bills and stuff done before I go buy it.

I haven't been putting much time into World of Warcraft lately, but apparently, it's all pumpkins and skeletons in there at the moment. If you're in China however, you're only allowed three hours of pumpkins before you start getting your level lowered... Five hours of play and your character would be back down to starter level. I wonder what would happen if they tried to introduce that law here?

Is Halloween even celebrated in China? Probably not I guess. I'm amazed at how much more popular Halloween is here than in the UK and toothycat mentioned that it's unheard of in Russia.

And boy can I waffle...
