My grandma Rose Helen turned 90 years old last week. Along with many relatives and friends, I flew home to Kalamazoo for a weekend of birthday festivities. Grandma had the same jovial expressions we all remember, despite the pain in her arthritic knees. Lauren was there for the weekend too, and it was a nice reason to see her.
On Saturday night, we went to
The Black Swan, which is where the Sunday brunch after my Bar Mitzvah was held and where I took Lauren for Valentine's Day. The highlight of the weekend for me was baking (and eating) Mimi cookies - a family recipe of spice cookies made with nutmeg, cinnamon, etc. and chocolate for good measure - to ensure the recipe is passed down through the generations. It was the first time I had eaten Mimi cookies since I was a kid. They are named for grandma's mother, Mimi, but made by Mimi's mother before her.
I have a vivid picture of my grandma's beaming smile in my mind right now. I hope to hold onto that forever.
