Ok, in case anyone's freaking out, those two subjects have nothing to do with each other except for both being mentioned in this post. Not sure if I'm going to write a proper full review, but for now I'm just enjoying the heck out of it. I will say that if I had to use one word to describe it, it would be retro. Along with the return to a section of "Fingertips" style mini-songs, "9 Secret Steps" sounds like Buddy Holly, and as other friends have pointed out, "Icky" sounds like something out of either a beach party movie or Austin Powers, and "Too Tall Girls" is very, very old school TMBG. As for which songs will win a spot on my coveted (hah) running mix, the only surefire contenders right now are "Call You Mom" and "You're on Fire," but I may put "Circular Karate Chop" on there, too. I would also like to point out how disturbing "Stone Cold Coup D'Etat" is! I can imagine parents buying the album for their kids, listening with them and getting to the part about the brother and sister about to kill their parents at dinner. TMBG have never shied away from violence, but between "Stone Cold" and "When Will You Die," they, or at least Linnell, certainly seems to be on a violent kick lately. In contrast, Flans can even make a song about "Black Ops" sound wistfully sweet. All in all I really love this album!
As for the protest, yes, I will be part of a real, live protest next month at the park where a high rise development is planned. We'll be making the signs for it at the fundraiser the night before. Since I last mentioned this issue, we've gotten hundreds of more "likes" on our Facebook page, some local news coverage, and some pro-development person posting a rather nasty entry in her blog about us, which got me more fired up than ever.
Back to trying not to think about turning 48 later this month :o
Love,
"Kay"
